Default ps3 hdmi/receiver

Hi,
New to the forum.

I have a ps3 and a bravia tv that has one hdmi in slot and can only support 1080i, with the blu ray setup on the ps3 i would rather have the hd sound, so can i have both hdmi sound with a receiver and the video at 1080i or do i have to have component video? also how many hdmi in/out slots do i need on the receiver.

cheers for your help

yes, you can have 1080i with an HDMI receiver.

as to how many hdmi slots you "need"? well I guess that depends on how many devices you have with HDMI.

you're kinda in the same situation i was in recently and a bunch of people on AVS forum helped me out a lot. I wasn't lookin to spend a lot, so i was recommended to get this receiver. When you sign up for free on this site, you get a discount on the unit.

http://shoponkyo.com/detail.cfm?prod...il=1&ext_war=1

I bought mine refurbished for $169 with the discount. It has 3 hdmi inputs and one output. Here's how i have mine rigged, and where i bought my items.

1 HDMI cable from PS3 to Receiver.
1 Optical cable from PS3 to receiver

1 HDMI cable from receiver to tv.

http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Go-4031...5656961&sr=8-3

this hdmi cable is cheap and awesome, read the reviews.

http://www.amazon.com/Fiber-Optical-...5656961&sr=8-4

same with this optical cable.

now, when i get an upconverting dvd player, i'll run the same setup with 1 hdmi cable and an optical cable to the receiver.

Hope this helps

If you are looking for a new receiver, at a minimum you should go with (if Onkyo) the 605/606, or a similar AVR that has the ability to accept HDMI audio (and decode HD audio). The 506 does not, so you will not be able to listen to HD audio, even though your PS3 decodes. As for cables, Monoprice is the place to shop for all of your cable needs.

I agree. Don't get that Onkyo 506 mentioned above, go with a 605 or 606. You can get either of those for around $300. And they both do DTS MA and True-HD.

If you really want a good receiver, get the 805. Amazon has it for $620 right now, but that may be more then you want to spend???

Why in the world would you spend $$ on an upconverting DVD player when you have a PS3? The PS3 is one of the better upconverters out there.

atm i cant decide what receiver to get:
ive read those to onkyo 605/606 ones are good to get, I need a website that ships internationally to New Zealand, also has 240 voltage etc not the us 110, are any of these sony ones decent that can definitly do full hd audio:
STR-DG720 STR-DG820 STR-DG920
or are these not so good in comparison to the onkyos?
even though i cant find a site which sells the sony ones to ship overseas

one other thing how do the cables work, do i have the hdmi in from the tv going to the receiver or the ps3? which way gives me the full hd sound (assuming i have the right receiver) plus 1080i video?

i hope this all makes sense, im trying to figure all this out so when i get the receiver i can connect it all up and go bang.

cheers for the help, much appreciated!!

you would need at a minimum, two HDMI cables.

Ps3 ---> HDMI cable ---> Receiver ---> HDMI cable ---> TV

If you go the Sony route, stick with the 820 or higher, in order to get HD audio decoding.

For connections, you'll run HDMI from your PS3 to your receiver and from your receiver to your TV.

Hopefully our other site Ausies can chime-in about where to purchase your gear.

I had a hell of a time looking at importing a receiver to Aus. IMO don't do it. It might be cheaper but warranty and power conversion is just not worth the headache. Go locally(NZ) or Aus.

JB Hi Fi is probably your best bet (not sure on international shipping). You can can get a pretty god deal online. But don't expect US conversion prices. Receivers here cost more, it's either import tax, being a different power supply and/or consumer demand.

I have a Onkyo TX-SR 576 which can handle 5.1 and 7.1 HD audio over HDMI as PCM. Happy with the unit. Only thing it doesn't upconvert analogue signals. But if you are just using your PS3 or HDMI devices, then no problem.

Good luck
