The only reason I ever bought the PS3 was for it's blu-ray capabilities. I only have one game for the PS3 and have never even finished it.
Now that more full featured standalone players are starting to come to market at more reasonable prices, I'm thinking it is time to unload the PS3 and get a standalone. I have a receiver that can decode the HD audio formats, so I would like a player that can bit stream them all. I'd also like a BD player with ethernet and a small hdd for update capability. Any recomendations for a quality standalone with these features? Preferably black but I could live with silver. Does anyone know what a used 40 gig PS3 is selling for these days? Or trade in value at the game stores? I don't really want to upgrade until prices are at a point where I wouldn't be putting more than $100 towards the standalone. |

I have done, just recently what you are thinking of doing. I sold my 40G PS3 with upgraded HDD for about $250 Can. I'm thinking that you should be able to get around $200 for a good used 40G PS3 on the market today. At that price, you would be able to pick up the Sony S350 for around $50 plus tax. Not bad.

I know that what the OP is thinking of doing, and what I have done is treasonous and sacreligious, but face it. Not everyone wants a gaming console to play movies on. Some people want the looks and abilities that a rack-mount stand-alone has.

Exactly. The PS3 just looks out of place with my other equipment. It's not as quiet as a standalone. It can't bitstream. It was a great player for it's time, but I'm not going to stick with it for the sake of nostalgia. It's time to move on to smaller and better things.

My goodness!
![]() ![]() ![]() Not everyone wants a PS3 in their AV rack. Some people prefer to have a stand-alone. When I sold my PS3, I didn't make a thread here about it, for this simple reason. The PS3 fanboys come running, saying "Don't do it, man! It's not worth it." Since the OP made a thread like this, the decision is already made. Saying "Don't do it! ![]() To the OP, sorry for jumping in like this. I say go for it, I know where you're coming from. |

So the PS3 doesn't bitstreem like my 1400 does. Can you tell me if there's a problem with that. What makes you unhappy that it doesn't Bitstreem? Iam just asking because like i say iam picking one up and i just would like to get all the facts Last edited by ozzman; 11-05-2008 at 07:13 PM. |

Thanks. I don't really understand why people would get so butt hurt about someone's else's choice in a blu-ray player. My PS3 was a decent player, but now I can get better for the same money; so why wouldn't I?
I almost forgot the thing that annoys me most about using the PS3 is the lack if an IR port to support a universal remote. It's annoying when your remote can control everything in your home theater, even the lighting; but can't control one of the most important components? Anyway, I don't really feel a need to further justify my decision. If you have any suggestions about how/where to sell my PS3 for a decent price and what standalone to replace it with........ thank you. For those of you that are happy with your PS3... I'm happy for you. |

As mentioned, you could try selling it on eBay, or if you don't want to ship it, use Craigslist. Personally, I used a local car forum that I frequent. Even putting an ad in the local paper might work for you. I know in my city, we have a paper that comes out once a week called "Bargain Finder." It's a collection of for sale and wanted ads that are put together by category. I don't know if they have anything like that where you live though.
