Default New Onkyo TX-SR875

I just purchased a new Onkyo TX-SR875 from Amazon.com that I am using with a Sony BDP-S1. Any quirks or tips that I should know before setting this monster up? I am also in the market for new speakers (5.1) and would appreciate any input as to brands and models ($1K - $2K budget). I haven't updated my receiver nor speakers since 1994 so I thought it might be time. Thanx in advance for any help!!

If you are looking for new speakers go here: www.soundandvisionmag.com. They have archived reviews and also their own forum as well. Enjoy that 875, and yes it is a beast!

Yes, find out what firmware version your receiver was packaged with. The 875 had the DTS-HDMA defect that produced loud booms on some titles. This thread is handy if you need some tips:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...onkyo+firmware

The place to download the firmware is here:

http://63.148.251.142/download/firmw...re_replace.cfm

If you decide to complete the firmware update, your unit's settings will be reset. If you have already set up your unit, you will need to set the entire thing up again after the update. Best to save some work and ensure it is done from the start.

It looks like we both share a love of the 875 and the Cure.

YAY, me too I upgraded from the 605 to the 875 today! All the extra speaker tweaks are awesome, and the fact that I can now use THXUltra 2 to upmix my PCM 5.1 to 7.1 is awesome! And this thing is a freakin' beast! Also make sure your firmware is at least 1.07 so you are not affected by the DTS bomb.... you check it by:
while holding "display" on the reciever, press "Standby/On" also on the reciever. Then within 3 seconds press "tone +" under the push out hood on the front of the unit, the first thing you will see is the main firmware.
Oh,,, and press and hold "display" on the remote for 6-8 seconds, and you will get the HQV menu, you can select brightness, hue, saturation, color, block NR, Picture mode, Edge enhancement, misquito NR, and random NR. This menu will not appear on the tv, only the reciever only.

I know that I saw the answer to this somewhere in the forums but I can't seem to find the answer doing a search, so please bear with me. Does anyone know how to resolve the audio/video sync problems with the 875? I have a tivo output via HDMI to the 875 and output to my TV from the 875 via HDMI. There is a 2 - 3 second delay between the audio and the lip sync in the video portion of the signal.

Does anyone know if the Onkyo TX-SR875 has a scrolling feature or is it always static. When displaying the audio source you cannot read the whole display so you really don't know exactly what is being displayed.

I can't answer your question ZMan, but I have one of my own: Why isn't the 875 more popular? Is it because of the audio popping problem on the 1.06 version? Or is it the price? I want one and will buy one soon due to the big discounts, but the 806 gets all the love and the 875 seems to be ignored by comparison...

.
I can't get that to work. I just bought my Onkyo 875 and according to onkyo it was made in August. Do I need to worry about the DSP/firmware popping issues? Thanks!

It should be ok I bought mine in february and had to update the dsp's. I would think that if it was made in august it is good. Still check the firmware to make sure. I love mine it is a beast. It gets pretty hot so keep it out in the open to get some fresh air.

All the reports about popping, sparks, smoke are false. The people who reported this were mo-mo's who stuck it in a enclosed cabinet with no ventilation.
I have mine on top of the entertainment stand free to breathe, a small fan on top helps to pull hot air away if you are worried.
Mine is on from about 7am to after midnight since tv gets watched alot by my family all day. Never had 1 problem.

So how do I do that? I called Onkyo and the guy told me he wasn't "allowed" to tell me which firmware version was on my unit, even though he could tell me my receiver was made in August.

When I do that my receiver just powers off. I think since this is a recently produced receiver (August) its 1.07 or better. I'll let it go for now. I won't even be bitstreaming audio for a while anyway since my theater wont be ready until December, and since I only have a PS3 for now.

i could be wrong, but i think 1.04 and higher, and you are safe from the dts bomb... the 1.08 update was for lip synching issues, not for dts bomb

After firmware 1.04 you are good. I have 1.04 and never felt the need to upgrade cause I don't want to re-set all the settings.
I really enjoy my 875 it sounds great. I gets used for movies every night with me. You got a good deal I paid 1169.00 in february for mine.

I got it to work, and my DSP1 showed 1.01/XXXXX and DSP2 showed 1.02/XXXXX. Unfortunately I don't have a dedicated CD player, and my DVD player doesn't seem to work for the firmware upgrade.

How do I get my 875 updated? Can I take it to a local dealer to have it updated?

Thanks!

Dude make sure you're looking at the right stuff. The DSP doesn't have a firmware version - it should just show a checksum. Are you sure you're not looking at the loader or HDMI version?

My current settings, nothing needs updated.

MAIN - 1.08/08223A
Update - 1.01/07615L
DSP1 - 8051 - 08214A
DSP2 - 8052 - 07518A
DSP3 - 8053 - 07820B
HDMI - 1.01/07706A

If your MAIN is already at 1.07 or higher then chances are everything else should be good too. Most of these firmware upgrades are for the very early run of receivers made.

MAIN - 1.08/08223A

DSP2 - 8052 - 07518A
DSP3 - 8053 - 07820B
HDMI - 1.01/07706A
.
Here are my numbers:

Main 87: 1.02 / 07625A
DSP 1st: SR8051 / 07601A
DSP 2nd: SR8052 / 07518A
DSP 3rd: SR8053 / 07518A
HDMI 1.01 / 07706A

I didn't have an "UPDATE" number like you did doby, but my "main" looks similar to your update #. Should I just take it to an authorized service center and have them run the update with my disc?

I managed to update my DSP #s, but now I need to buy an RS232 cable to update my Main firmware.
