I figure this will be a seperate release from the Bond Volume box sets, since this film is from a different studio, correct?

It's from MGM, but it's not in the Bond sets.

Crappy movie, but the completist in me will probably cave in and pick it up. Especially if it comes in a steelbook.

Yeah, it's not an EON production, and will therefore not be a part of the boxsets, steelbooks, nor indeed any "official" Bond numbering, similar to the first Casino Royale. Regardless of MGM now owning it.

I don't particularly like it, but I'll still get it, for the sake of Bond and Kershner.

Will be picking this up, even if it's (as others have mentioned) a rather poor entry in the 007 series...

This is good news. Fox/MGM just released the original Casino Royale (missing old DVD extras, but with some new) on DVD in a Collector's Edition, so why not this! I'm sure the commentary will be interesting, considering its troubled production. Don't count on a steelbook though fellas.

I've never seen this and am quite aware of it not being an official Bond film. Otherwise, what does everybody think of this?

It's not bad. However, it is a remake, essentially, of THUNDERBALL, so you really have a sense of Deja Vu.

Far inferior to Thunderball. It is rather disjointed, but it does have Connery and the film has its moments.

What really kills it for me is the lack of the James Bond Theme on the soundtrack due to it not being an "official" production. I thought the villain was well-played and Kim Basinger was hot, but Connery was just off imo. All that said, I bought the Adam West Batman; I'll probably buy this one for the novelty of it. It has its moments.

Pros:
Kim Basinger
Bárbara Carrera
Max von Sydow
Bernie Casey (1 of only 2 african-americans who have played the role of Felix Leiter --and the 1st one to do it. The other one is Jeffrey Wright)
Klaus Maria Brandauer
BD surely will improve A LOT from the mediocre DVD.
Sean Connery!
and Mr. Bean! (Back then only known as Rowan Atkinson)

Cons:
Sean Connery was already too old for the role (albeit Sean was actually younger than Roger Moore in his last Bond movies)
It's an inferior remake of Thunderball
It's not an "official" Bond film.
M, Q and Moneypenny not even close to the original ones.

I think I may upgrade as soon as the price drops.

I LOVE Bárbara Carrera in this movie. One of my favorite Bond girls ever!

it has all the right ingredients BUT it feels 'flat' from the very first minute and never seems to get better IMO.

The "real" Broccoli Bonds would never have sunk to putting in a gawky Black Adder I-era Rowan Atkinson as comedy relief...

(John Cleese, maybe, and the proto-Smokey & the Bandit sherriff in the Roger Moore's, but the dignity line was drawn at Atkinson.)
