I am in the market for a complete 5.1 system. My budget is around $2,000. Could you guys suggest some speakers, sub and receiver for me. I only have 2 inputs, ps3 and cable box. My television is a Panasonic 46" 800U. I will be buying all my cables from monoprice and I already have the UPS from monoprice.
Thanks! Jacob22 |

Alright, who wants to handle this one? Want me to take it? Alright, fine. I'll do it. Give me a second here.
:::reserves this space, goes off to think::: With you, my good sir, I'm going to go all random. Let's give you Swan speakers, an Acoustic Audio subwoofer, and...for good measure, a Pioneer receiver. Let's see. First! Pioneer VSX-1019. I would like to send you towards Marantz, but I think you'll be fine with a 1019. Unless you can find a Elite VSX-01 for around $500. ![]() Go to Amazon. $450-$475. Tada! http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-VSX-10...3380360&sr=8-1 Second. Speakers. Usually, I try to send people towards Paradigm at this price point, maybe Monitor Audio if you had a bit more, but HiVi and Swan are my favorites at the moment, so let' send you towards a sweet sweet setup consisting of: -Swan Diva 4.2 Floorstanders ($709/pr) -Diva 4.2C Center ($289) -Diva 4.2R Dipole Rears ($399/pr) More info on the Swan 4.2 setup available here: http://www.swanspeaker.com/product/htm/view.asp?id=241 ![]() Purchase from here: http://www.theaudioinsider.com/manuf...s.php/mPath/10 Which is a fully licensed online dealer of Swan speakers. Although I do believe that you should audition before you buy, see if you can find a local dealer to listen from, and then pick them up on the internet. If anything, leave the rears for last. Subwoofer! If you want the rears now, go with an Acoustic Audio HD-Sub12. Great entry-level subwoofer. They've become a popular brand here, with glowing reviews. Check the subwoofer thread there for more options. They'll run you sub-$200: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=85212 (Acoustic Audio thread) If you want a bit more, go with the ever reliable Elemental Designs A2-300, which is around $400. That's the baby of choice. A keeper. Not a looker, but a powerful subwoofer. ![]() Wires, go to monoprice.com...you'd need 10 pairs of banana plugs, a 50' - 100' spool of 12 or 14 AWG cable, a subwoofer coaxial RG6 cable...anything else? Welcome Jacob,
JJ makes a good suggestion, that would be a nice setup. If you do have the extra $1000 then look at the Pioneer Elites, preferably the 03 and 05. Also the Denons, like the 2309 or 2809. Yamaha 1900 or the Onkyo 876. ALSO, I really suggest that you spend some good quality time auditioning the speakers before you buy. Swan may be hard to audition but there are a lot of MFGs that you can listen to. Find dealers in your area and then listen to every thing you can. here is a small list of mfgs that would be good to audition, just type in their names to MSN.com and it should pull up their website so you can "find a dealer": KEF, B&W (bowers and wilkins), Swan, Klipsch, Definitive Tech, Energy, Mirage, Paradigm, Monitor Audio, Boston Acoustic, Polk. for a more complete list there is a sticky in this forum that has a complete list of speaker mfgs. Dealers will usually give you a better deal then the likes of BB and other brick and mortar stores, plus they usually know a good deal about the speakers and if you are buying all 5 at a time will discount and work with you and your budget. Good luck. Have fun auditioning, and take music and movies you are really familiar with so you have reference material. |

Those 4.2s are 6 ohm speakers. Not sure how that will directly effect your receiver purchase, but you should be aware. One of the differences between the .1 line and the .2 line from Swans, was that they changed the speaker impedance.
Forum member DigitalKnight is selling his Swan 7 channel set up for around $1500. If you live near the south east area of Pennsylvania, I'd consider getting those speakers. |
