Default System complete...and a let down

Finally got around to purchasing some fronts for my HT and now it is set up, I'm a little disappointed. Hopefully that can be changed.

My gallery is here.

Originally, I had the small Energy Take Classic system. Floorstanding speakers were purchased and what were the fronts became the surrounds on stands (fyi: intial set up, I had rears installed instead of surrounds because the room is a loft with no walls to mount anything and I hate stands).

I guess my complaint is that what were once the "surrounds" (mounted behind my sitting position) no longer produce sound unless I have a 7.1 movie playing (kind of limited by the amount of GOOD 7.1 movies) and I've lost that "sound envelope" I had previously. Other than:

a) changing the set-up to 7 channel, or
b) reversing the surrounds with the rears in the back of the avr

...is there another way I can get back to what I had? I've read a few posts of people changing back to 5.1, but I just wanted to check prior to switching back.

Well, you COULD splice lines from the surround outputs to the rears (using banana plugs that are piggybacked), then simply unplug the piggybacked surround outputs when you know you've got a 7.1 film.

Have you tried using PLIIx? That will matrix rear channels from 5.1 sources.

Dr. Steve - never considered the splicing, but then I would lose the 7.1 (the idea and/or logistics of getting behind the unit to plug/unplug them everytime we watch a 7.1 doesn't appeal to me).

Bislander - tried PLIIx last night (usually have it set to AUTO) without a result...or at least a result I could hear.

WAF - no more ceiling/wall-mounted speakers - right now speaker wire for the surrounds are hidden by furniture.

did you instruct the receiver that you are now using surround and rear channels?

...also wired correctly?

...as well as change the PS3 settings to 7.1?

Thanks, Crackin. Wiring is correct. The AVR does a rough calibration and it picked up the surrounds, but I didn't even THINK to check the PS3. However, I watched Shoot 'Em Up over the weekend and all 7.1 were working wonderfully.

Not being in front of the PS3 now, is there an AUTO option there, or would it need to be changed each time I run a 5.1/7.1 movie?

when you set up the hdmi audio, there is an "auto" feature...or you can manually select everything.

Settings - Sound Settings - Audio Output Settings - HDMI

Nice link, cheers. I'll take a look tonight.

Last question: I have the 80GB PS3 - from what I've read, this particular model does NOT play SACD music discs.

Is this true? Anyone?

I believe with the 80gb models, some do and some do not. How to tell which one does? Im not sure, but it might have the SACD logo on the side of the system.

(but I might be wrong)

You should be correct Crackin'. My original 20GB features the sacd logo. Last known 80 GB to feature the SACD functionality was the Metal Gear 4 bundle AFAIK. (can anyone confirm this?)

I have the 80 gig Motorstorm Bundle PS3, and I can confirm that it plays SACDs.

We have found that the PS-3 games have outstanding sound from the rears in our 7.1 system, while very few movies do. I think the 7.1 is evolving thing with Blu-ray and we just need to be patient.

I've read that some do, some don't. My ps3 80GB does NOT have the logo, but I bought the version prior to the PS3 Slim coming out (I believe the slims do NOT play SACDs).

Apparently, you can find out here.

That would seem to be a configuration problem somewhere because you should hear audio from all of your speakers when using PLIIx. The only time you would not hear something from the rears when there is audio in the surrounds is when your receiver believes the incoming source is already 7.1.

What happens if you try 6.1 matrix DSPs such as DTS Neo:6 or DD-EX?

I'm 99% sure I heard nothing, but I'll make a few adjustments and I'll try again this evening.

Thanks

Talking 7.1

When I use the PLIIx or DTS Neo 6 settings on my Onkyo, I can definitely hear sound coming from all 4 of my surround speakers. When I ran the Audyssey set up, it was hard to hear the rear surrounds. So, I went in and manually set up all of the speakers. I had to bump up the level on the rears a little higher than the side surrounds, but now all of the 7.1 speakers are evenly matched in output at my listening position. You may have to do the same with yours. And, no, the last Sony 80 Gig PS3 does NOT play SACDs.

Crackin - checked settings on the PS3 and although I had it set on Auto, all choices were checked any way, except for AAC I believe.

Bislander/HiDefRev - switched from AUTO to PLIIxMovie on the receiver AND jacked my surrounds/rears up, popped in Quantum of Solace.

Wow, what a difference 24 hours makes.

Thanks for the help.

HiDefRev - (re: SACDs) oh balls. Well, at least it saves me some cash in purchasing those bloody things.

Good to see you got some kind of resolution using PLIIxMovie....I use just this and will sometimes matrix it into all 7 channels. Happy listening slimmer.

Slimmer nice Energy setup. When do you think you will be upgrading the center to the CC10?

How is the sound from the CF series?

This is the model I have and to my knowledge you are correct. However, I don't recall any such logos being on my particular console.
