Frankly, I know nothing about THE HUMAN STAIN, but I'm delighted beyond all measure that THE CROSSING GUARD, Sean Penn's best film (and, yes, I've seen INTO THE WILD), is finally on its way! Bye bye, old non-anamorphic DVD! |

The Human stain is IMO an OK but not particularly great film. I'd rate it as just average. It does explore an interesting theme though, about a man with two black parents who looks white, and tries to deny his ancestry, by creating an elaborate false facade about his identity.

Interesting, I see that Amazon has this listed as a pre-order coming out in September for 19.99. I just picked this up today (8/20) at Walmart for $5.00 It had a 'Promo' label on it. Oh well. Bargain.

Just picked this up at Walmart, from a quick scan The Crossing Guard looks good. Audio is DTS-HD 2.0 so we lose the 5.1 mix the UK disc has (from the review it sounds like we aren't missing much here). Best news? This wave of Echo Bridge double features are all on BD50s so the movies have a little more "breathing" room.

I picked this up for $5 at Wal-Mart today. I'm scanning the disc now (haven't watched it yet), but right off the bat, I should tell you that, while both films are in approximate OAR and The Human Stain is 1080p23.976, The Crossing Guard is 1080/30i. I would remind you, however, that Pro-B has informed us that the Canal disc, while 1080p, is not all that great in the PQ department. The additional loss of the 5.1 track is all the more disappointing, however.
Both films feature DTS-HD MA 2.0 tracks and no subtitles. The Crossing Guard does include a promo featurette running 5:43 (absent from the Canal disc), and The Human Stain has an Alternate Scene running 4:10 and a Behind the Scenes featurette running 7:38. EDIT: Interestingly, I found Warner's Japanese release of the film, and it is also apparently 1080i according to the back cover. Perhaps the Miriamax master is native 1080i (due to age), and Canal simply did a frame rate conversion for their disc? Last edited by McCrutchy; 09-07-2012 at 04:42 AM. |

Canal's release isn't exactly a beauty, but it is serviceable.
If you want this film in your collections -- and I think that it is one of Penn's very best -- you should pick up whatever release you can. Though I am yet to see the U.S. release, I would be shocked if it is worse or better than the Canal release. Miramax had one problematic master back in the days that they passed around. It is the same master that was used for the original non-anamorphic DVD. If they did not bother to rescan the film now, I doubt they will do it in the future. I could not be happier to replace my old R1 DVD (never bought the reissue). And the score is beautiful. ![]() Quote:

Walmart had this for sale in a stand filled w/catalog titles for $5. The stand is in the very back of the electronics deptartment. Most of the titles were Lionsgate cheapies and these Echo Bridge double features. I'm going to give this a watch tonight after work. May even watch the other part of the double bill, The Human Stain, tonight as well. I didn't know Human Stain was written by Nicholas Meyers (Time after Time/Star Trek 2).

Just got my copy today. Taking a look at The Human Stain, I could tell right away that it was the same master used for the dvd. Remember back in 2003 when Miramax gave us such wonderful dvd transfers as Gangs of New York and Cold Mountain? That's just what this looks like. Heavy Halos, Smeary DNR. Viewing it also gives the effect of having the brightness on your set turned down too low and the color turned way too high. It's a mess all around
