Just picked this up at Walmart, from a quick scan The Crossing Guard looks good. Audio is DTS-HD 2.0 so we lose the 5.1 mix the UK disc has (from the review it sounds like we aren't missing much here). Best news? This wave of Echo Bridge double features are all on BD50s so the movies have a little more "breathing" room.

I picked this up for $5 at Wal-Mart today. I'm scanning the disc now (haven't watched it yet), but right off the bat, I should tell you that, while both films are in approximate OAR and The Human Stain is 1080p23.976, The Crossing Guard is 1080/30i. I would remind you, however, that Pro-B has informed us that the Canal disc, while 1080p, is not all that great in the PQ department. The additional loss of the 5.1 track is all the more disappointing, however.
Both films feature DTS-HD MA 2.0 tracks and no subtitles. The Crossing Guard does include a promo featurette running 5:43 (absent from the Canal disc), and The Human Stain has an Alternate Scene running 4:10 and a Behind the Scenes featurette running 7:38. EDIT: Interestingly, I found Warner's Japanese release of the film, and it is also apparently 1080i according to the back cover. Perhaps the Miriamax master is native 1080i (due to age), and Canal simply did a frame rate conversion for their disc? Last edited by McCrutchy; 09-07-2012 at 04:42 AM. |

Canal's release isn't exactly a beauty, but it is serviceable.
If you want this film in your collections -- and I think that it is one of Penn's very best -- you should pick up whatever release you can. Though I am yet to see the U.S. release, I would be shocked if it is worse or better than the Canal release. Miramax had one problematic master back in the days that they passed around. It is the same master that was used for the original non-anamorphic DVD. If they did not bother to rescan the film now, I doubt they will do it in the future. I could not be happier to replace my old R1 DVD (never bought the reissue). And the score is beautiful. ![]() Quote:
