question on COD co-op mode

I have COD world at war but unfortunately dont have online multiplayer capability. My question is this, when I go to co-op mode the only mode available to me is campaign mode.I know once the game is completed I can unlock zombie mode. But under multiplayer split screen mode there are many different modes to choose from .However, no matter what mode I choose there are no enemy ai to fight.The game just lets me run around but there is no enemy to be found.It makes no sense. I thought it would have options like ghost recon had where you and a friend (offline) could play split screen and fight enemies.Am I missing something here.It seems to me that unless you play against your split screen partner your out of luck and even then its just the 2 of you doing battle. No other ai enemies or comrades.Any help would be appreciated.

You can play offline through out co-op, just go to splitscreen i believe and click on campain and start from the first mission.
