Default Small Subwoofers - In Size and Price

Perhaps a bit of a stretch - since I know there is a careful line to tread between performance and price - all the moreso when you include size as well - but for those who are more knowledgeable than myself, I'm in the process of consulting a relative on subwoofer choices, but far be it for me to intrude on his WAF factor (completely removing the eD from the picture, sorry, Kingy) - and I don't want to give him something that lacks detail, either. I don't know much about the lower-end Polk or Klipsch offerings (suffice to say I've heard the word garden-variety appears a few times), be they so prevalent everywhere, but I do know there are other good offerings in the range of $300 under that aren't sized like Sherman tanks but can actually accurately show what one of their muzzles would sound like.

I'm hoping Big Daddy finds his way here, I think he knows some choices I might be able to look into.

Velodyne perhaps?

I'm curious to see what you end up with- I'm in no hurry but am looking at the smaller-dimension subs as well. I have an 8" right now that does the trick but would like to upgrade to a 10" sub if I can find one that isn't enormous.

Like I said, aramis, it's all a careful balance of size, price, and performance. I'm about to make him stretch for the Dynamo if I can manage it - I'm looking at internet brands though. Some of the Polks are tantalizing, though, such as the PSW111. I need to give it a listen.

Not all the eD subs are giant monsters you know.
The A2-300 is only $350 and hits 18Hz with its 250W 12" driver.
It's only 18" x 18" (21.5" deep), which for the sound you're getting is a very small footprint.
http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_...roducts_id=407

Or for $325 there's the A2-250 with a 250W 10" driver.
It's 13.75" x 13.75" (24" deep) and has the same frequency response as the A2-300 with slightly less output.
http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_...roducts_id=406

No reason to stay away from eD, especially where price AND performance are concerned.

Its not my choice, Dob - showed his young wife pictures of the eD a2-300 from this forum itself and she denied him outright. 18x18x18 is far too big for her, and she remarked that she didn't want that "construction equipment looking thing" in the living room. I think the finish, might've been too - ah, but you know women. Might as well spray paint the dang thing pink or something,

I'll try to see what I can do with the 250.

Seeing that both money and size are a factor, have you considereed this yet JJ

I was thinking Velodyne from the getgo - clicked on your link, and saw this for that one sub:

Product Details
Product Dimensions: 20 x 19.5 x 16.2 inches

Maybe I should use the chloroform trick on her until his setup is complete! I might have to settle for the Polk PSW110 or 111 unless there is an online brand with an excellent small offering...but I'm still looking. That's why they came to me, after all.

Could always try and upsell them to an Ultracube 10.
HxWxD - 12-15/16 in x 11-7/16 in x 11-7/16 in
1500W peak, 650W RMS.

Unfortunately it has a $799 price tag, which means you'd get it for around $639 at the cheapest.

I think chloroform may work best, you don't want to sacrifice too much performance just for the WAF. Perhaps she should see how the eD looks with a cactus on top of it?

What are the size limits what does she consider large? The only "small" subs that I know of that are decent come at a premium price. Driver King is also right the eD subs come in different finishes now.

Yeah and those matte finishes are usually only an extra $35 which is peanuts.

I don't know. It's not like she's set him strict limitations. But they saw my Dynamo and she was like "Maybe that"

So even then. This is why I came to you guys. And I think she's actually allergic to peanuts. Go figure. This thread is getting funny to me, I'm definitely using the chloroform method and sticking the a2-300 in there. Besides, with the time it takes to get to their house, she might forget... It is harder than I thought it would be.

Size matters........ you can't really deny physics..... even the sunfires, which "Try" can't touch a larger driver (of a decent sub at least.... there are plenty of 15+ inch subs out there that are garbage)

Right now the eD can't be beat for its size vs value. If they are willing to put out a little extra for a Dynamo that will work as well, and Beta is right - size does matter - don't give me a teaspoon to fill a tub with

I think I'll just stick an A7-900 and pass it off as a new dinette table.
