Default 5.1 v 7.1

personnally i have been disapointed with 7.1. i had a largeish room with my rear speakers on the back wall about 8ft behind my listening position and in 5.1 gave a great feeliong of surround sound. i then added in the 2 extra speakers to give me 7.1 but due to the room i had these positioned level with my listening position to give me, what a hoped, an all round sound experience.

i was bitterly disappointed. listening to 5.1 stuff sent the rear effects to these middle speakers and it all felt on top of me i did not have that expansive feel albeit i did hear some sounds i had not heard before.generally the 7.1 has not been as good as what i hoped apart from pans labyrinth which did blow me away. in fact i enjoyed listening to stuff in dts 6.1 es more it certainly sounded better to me anyway, in particular the saw movies.

i have kept my 7.1 set up as i spent a lot of money and have learnt to live with the different sound to what i was used to, however i have heard of people going back to 5.1 set ups. i think it all depends on how you perceive it and your room set up. hope that helps.
