Default HDMI Splitter

I need to get an HDMI splitter, but am not sure what to go with. Both Monoprice and Firefold have inexpensive active (powered) 1x2 options. Any opinions out there?

I have already tried a passive (non-powered) 1x2 splitter from Monopricethat sort-of worked, but is not acceptable.

I tried the cheap non-powered HDMI splitter from monoprice first and I found it to be worthless.

Then I bought a $50 powered HDMI splitter off of ebay and it works great. So my only advice is to at least get one that is powered.

2 sources into 1 display would be a switcher. 1 source into 2 displays is a splitter.. which is useful if you are running a tv and a projector in the same room.

i have been using a powered monoprice splitter for over a year and it works great. even is controlled by my harmony.

my advise is to get one larger than 2:1 for futureproofing.

1 source (Directv HDDVR with only 1 HDMI out) to 2 other pieces (Onkyo 605 receiver and TV).

Why wouldn't you just just the HDMI out on the Onkyo? connect the HD DVR to the input 1 and you only need one HDMI to the TV.

That is waht I am currently doing. The problem with that is, sometimes I don't want the receiver and surround sound on. When I want to have audio coming from the TV only, I have to use component. I want to get away from the component because the PQ using component is much dimmer than using HDMI. I have to up my contrast significantly to even get close to the HDMI. Hope that made sense.

There is a setting on the receiver that will allow audio pass through to the TV. I can look it up in the manual if you would like. It is under one of the menu setting. It is a bit of an inconvenience, but it saves you money on a switch.

but, the receiver has to be on, correct?

My point in the splitter, is to not have to have the receiver on at all.

good point, yes the receiver still has to be on. I suppose if it is not amplifying the sound, or powering a sub, then the power draw will be small, but it may still get hot.

As previously stated, you may want to invest in a 4x1 switch as you never know what more you may need to switch in the future.

can i ask is the picture quality affected if using a switcher or splitter? say if you only have one HDMI on your tv and have a ps3 and sky hd box(satelite receiver) and instead of taking one out each time you want to use the other if you use one of the above does it take from the quality?

Depends on the quality of the splitter. The first one I bought was very cheap and it did have some minor negative affects on the PQ. A good quality one (active/powered) should not affect the PQ in any way.

In the situation you are describing, I think you would need a switcher, not a splitter. A splitter takes the feed from one source and outputs it to other pieces of equipment. If you only have one HDMI input on yout TV and want two source to get to it, you would want a switcher. A switcher takes the HDMI outputs from multiple sources and inputs it into a single HDMI input. Hope that made sense.

Thanks! I have 2 HDMI inputs, so thankfully its not a problem, but was always curious.. (my first tv only had 1 HDMI input, but I only had 1 HD source, the PS3, at the time)

Cheers!

I posted this in another thread, but this thread has a more appropriate title.

If you have 2 TV's (in different rooms) hooked up to a split HD DVR source, how do you change the channel in the room with out the receiver?
