Default Blockbuster could be more competitive

Okay, first off, this is not a "Bash Blockbuster Thread", but the other day I strolled into my local Blockbuster store to look at their new and used Blu-ray movies for sale. Now, I know that their MAIN business is to rent movies but that still doesn't explain their incredibly high Blu-ray prices. Nearly every Blu was $34.99! Every single used Blu was $29.99! It just seems to me that they could be a little more competitive with other stores.

True, their prices are a wee bit too high. Here in Canada at least, they're becoming a bit more competitive with new release prices being on par with Best Buy/Future Shop. Plus they are starting to get into the act of adding bonuses to your purchase (limited slipcovers, bonus discs etc.)

I've been noticing that also. The other day I was in there and said it loud enough so the manager could hear me. Made my wife blush. Great fun, though.

you should just be glad you have a blockbuster around you. the closest blockbuster to me is probably around 30-40 miles. the only rental store in my area is family video and they havent even touched blu-rays yet... renting or selling!!

Well you would be crazy to buy anything from them when you know you can get the same movie for almost $20 or less from Amazon. Granted if you don't mind the wait if you don't have Prime. I also think BestBuy Bluray prices are outrageous too considering there is not much costumers in the store. I have made a vow i am not paying more than $24 for a Bluray movie and most times that's stretch.

Go the first week of release and you'll find better prices especially on catalog titles.

The week after release the prices shoot up.

i know exactly where you live (well not exactly). Dated a girl out there once though, Family Video absolutely dominates this landscape for some reason. I don't know of any other chains out that way.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Blockbuster is the Disneyland of video stores. Real video stores are the mom and pop shops. You know, the ones with a section in the back.

why would blockbuster be more competitive though? they haven't ever been to begin with. why start now? i don't shop at blockbuster anymore. i will rent from there, but that's about it. what i don't get though is how blockbuster was always competitive with their music, cd's and such, but they were never at all with their movies.

I can always see BlockBuster as place to rent movies not a place to buy movies.
There prices for movies that are for sale are way up there why would anyone but a new movie here is beyond me.

The Blockbuster near me had 'Before the Devil Knows You're Dead' for $19.99 the week of release. I thought that was a good deal since it was going for $25 everywhere else.

This isn't really surprising to me, since they've always been higher than most stores, and honestly, they're not catering to the consumer who is really "shopping around"

I think Giant Eagle (for those who are aware of them) could certainly stand to be more competitive since they JUST recently began adding movie sections, and even rental departments within their grocery stores...... It would be a good opportunity to draw more business in..... heck, I'd volunteer to do the grocery shopping if I thought there was a chance I could sneak a cheap BD into the cart!!!! But as it stands now, they're pretty much STEADY with MSRP......

In Canada, I see prices hovering around $35 Canadian for new Blu-rays.

However the previously viewed Blu-rays are starting to appear at $20 Canadian. "The spy who loved me" appeared for $20 only a few weeks after I bought it for $25 new. Too bad.

For you US guys, our dollar dropped recently from par to about 81 cents US. So multiply the prices above by .81

It's a Kansas/St. Louis/south thing. When I was living south of KC on the Kansas side, they had Movie Gallery and Family Video both in this tiny little town but no Blockbuster anywhere in sight.
