this is the great news that were talking about in AVS last week and were closed.Yes this is true just wait NEW LINE to announce it..This means a clear evidence that BD is superior to HD-DVD another great news in the face of HD-DVD fans,this their latest quotation i love it :
Hold the music folks. Regardless of whether the timing is true or not, let's look at some numbers shall we? King Kong (HD DVD) which we know maxes out the capacity of 30GB DL HD DVD and had to drop the TrueHD track to do it, has a running time of 187 minutes. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Extended Edition) has a running time of 208 minutes Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (Extended Edition) has a running time of 208 minutes Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (Extended Edition) has a running time of 250 minutes. How, pray tell, does New Line Cinema fit any of these movies (particularly LotR: RotK) onto a 30GB HD DVD without seriously degrading PQ, hm? I'm not saying whether Josh is right. I don't care, really - the titles will come when they come, and not a moment sooner. But the numbers indicate that what he says might be true. Report Post |

WHEN IS THE LORD OF THE RINGS GOING TO BE RELEASED IN HIGH DEFINITION (EITHER HD-DVD OR BLU-RAY)?
The high definition formats that have recently launched offer exceptional picture and sound quality in addition to new interactive bonus feature capabilities. New Line Home Entertainment is committed to the high definition format and is very excited about the idea of releasing the Trilogy in the format. However, New Line is also committed to maximizing the capabilities of the technology to deliver a cutting edge high definition experience. This will take more time as well as the participation of the filmmakers to achieve. It is currently not scheduled for release until, at the earliest, 2008. http://www.lordoftherings.net/index_...imiteddvd.html |

New Line had already admitted that they were working on a LOTR release. I think it is very possible that these will be released in November (the normal launch time for all LOTR DVDs). I can't wait!!!! I'm so glad they did them right with the EE and PCM!

Wasn't it said a long time ago in a galaxy far , well anyways they said why do you need so much space on a disc for a movie. The Lord of the Rings is the perfect example. We get extended versions because we can. This is excellent, but is the source reliable on the info.

BeatBoy may be a fanboy but he is pretty reliable. He gets hate on AVS because he likes Blu-ray but his information is almost always correct.

I need to update my Excel sheet and I need some help to figure out if my conversion is correct.
For LOTR:ROTK EE, the running time is 250. Using LPCM 7.1, 24-bit/48kHz, the bitrate is 9.2Mbps. To convert this to GB(bytes) and not Gb(bits), what should I do? 250 minutes x 60 seconds = 15,000 seconds 9.2Mbps x 15,000 = 138,000Mb So to get to GB, 138,000Mb / 8192 = 16.85GB? 8192 = 1024 (the thousandth conversion) x 8 (bit to byte) fuad |

^^^ Hard drives and CD/DVD/HD discs don't use binary prefix, they use decimal prefix.
1MB = 1,000,000 1GB = 1,000,000,000 Calculations: 24 * 48000 * 8 = 9,216,000bps = 9.216MBps 9.216Mbps * 15000 = 138240Mb 138240Mb/8000 = 17.28GB Video: 50 - 17.28 = 32.72GB (32.72GB * 8000) / 15000 = 17.45Mbps ABR Ugh! I would suggest that TrueHD is manadatory for LOTR. Gary P.S. You were mixing units anyway. 9,216,000bps is not 9.2Mebps (note the correct modern scientific form of binary prefix), it's 9,216,000/(1024*1024) = 8.79Mebps. IEC binary prefixes: 2^10: kibi (Ki) 2^20: mebi (Me) 2^30: gibi (Gi) 2^40: tebi (Ti) |

Let's see, the EE took two regular DVDs, and so will the HD-DVD, so even though it's in HD, where's the big advancement in storage technology. Oh, that's right, it's with BD. This reality, which can easily be proven w/ a little math, should be a wake-up call for the industry. I know that not very many movies are made that will use that much storage, but if it's 2007 and you're supporting a tech. that still needs multiple discs/tapes just for the main feature, you must see that that's an issue, especially when a competing technology doesn't have that problem. This is no longer a game where the numbers can be spun. If this is true, then it really is writing on the wall, especially w/ the fan base these movies have.

If he is getting all his info from reps and Best Buy managers ( which he has said he has gotten info from before ) then I would not rule the info as valid, reps and BB folks are about as reliable as CSRs from DirecTV. Now for the logic part on all of this, there is no way New Line would make a lesser version of LOTR to make up what Warner did for the Matrix release, Warner may own New Line but New Line makes their decisions, Robert Shaye still runs the company, for example, why are Warner movies on HBO and New Line films on Starz, it is just like Dreamworks and Paramount. The other part on all of this is, if Warner had control of LOTR, why make a lesser version of it on HD DVD when Warner shares in the profits from it and loves HD DVD, why cut their own throats, if a 30 gig disc can't hold the film then they would release a second disc, which always works as far as marketing goes. Because this is true about BD-50 you have 20 GB more Space its more logic to think that BD is more superior than HD-DVD ....it is logically speaking for a 208 minutes length can be fitted on BD50 whereas on HD-DVD they are stucking so as a result should remove DOLBY THD...or degrade the PQ here we are the stronger we can maximise the bit rate ,we can include PCM,we can include DOLBY THD we can include BD-J we can do many things with BD ,,,,BUT HD_DVD is old technology and over
but warner owned NEWLINE maybe its true i dont know here you are right that warner are falling in love with HD-DVD. Last edited by Scorxpion; 03-27-2007 at 04:49 PM. |
