Why are they still so high? We're looking at $7 movies but drives still too expensive. I'm not saying burners but at least only player. I was tracing the price of the good GGW-H20L from LG since last year, was going down very quickly until at once everybody raised the prices again.
When are you we gonna see a mainstream usage of PC drives? |

Well I don't think it wasn't movie playback that drove PC DVD drives to their populatiy or the prices down. It was the archival market and popularity in that space. Without this same phenomenon for Blu-ray I don't think prices are going to come down much anytime soon. I wish they would as well as I already have 2 Blu-ray writers but I think this is the reality.
Also the whole DHCP thing turns many off from using a PC for Blu-ray playback. Last edited by Jimbo976; 11-29-2009 at 12:17 AM. |

DVD writers really didn't go mainstream until media prices dropped. The ability to copy DVD movies was also a big selling point. I'm guessing it will be the same for BD drives.

i wouldnt exactly say that. that is the main reason i bought mine, for increased storage. id say a lot of people that burn stuff to dvd will want to use bluray, especially when the discs are cheaper.

A 8X BD-ROM drive costs around $105. For those that want a 4X BD-ROM drive they are available for under $60. Prices keep falling on BD-ROM drives. Of course after one pays around $100 for the BLU-RAY playback software the price of adding BLU-RAY to a compatible desktop computer is around $160. One can purchase a Panasonic DMP-BD60 standalone BLU-RAY player for around $125 at Amazon.

Since some high quality optical discs can last 50 to 100+ years. 50GB BLU-RAY discs would be ideal for long term storage of important files. Also optical discs are immune to magnetic fields.
