Looks like the prices are starting to come down. If they can sell this drive at this price, the decks should follow suit soon and drop prices just a bit.

There is two things that are a problem here.
1. This is only a player (Only usefull for media centers) 2. Media Center still does not support HD Dud or blu ray playback within media center. You would have to use a third party app which isn't as user friendly. |

Agreed with both of your points, however, the decks are "just players" as well, and if Phillips can offer "just a player" to work in a PC at $199, there is no logical reason why the decks have to be priced at $499 and above. I would argue that the additional circuitry, casing, etc of a deck would not cost $300, more like $150 at bulk commodity pricing. This should allow for BD manufacturers to lower their deck prices just a bit, perhaps $399 or $349. Point being, I'm just talking about the hardware here and the hardware components as it pertains to pricing, not the usability or convenience of the device.

Don't forget a standalone player must pay the licensing fees for any video or audio codecs it decodes, in a computer these would be paid by the software vendor rather than the drive....
I agree though, player prices will be able to come down soon. Although they are already much lower than $499 as long as you don't buy at a retail store. Someone a while back posted that Best Buy's cost on a $499 S300 was $350. |
