Default Best Profile 2.0 Player for $1000 or Less?

I have two PS3s but I am ready to upgrade to a standalone.

Is there a consenus answer as to what is the best profile 2.0 standalone?

I think most people will say the Panasonic DMPBD55 or Sony BDPS550. I actually cant think of any other really good 2.0 from anyone else. Neither pioneer nor Denon have 2.0 yet, and all of the other really really good models are still 1.1 and more than $1k.

^^What he said. It's very hard to compete with the S550 or the BD55 right now. Most of the higher end manufacturers have yet to put out their 2.0 players.

If you don't need the decoding you can always score a BD35 or a S350. I friend bought a S350 for 210$CAD! (add 9.99$ for a 2gig Usb Stick and you,re 2.0)

That can be done, but when I talked to the Sony rep he said that there minor video and audio processing improvements on the Sony 550 vs the 350. I dont know how noticeable it is to everyone, but there should be other improvements other than just decoding

I wouldn't consider going from the PS3 to a standalone a upgrade

IMO it is flipping a coin between any of Sony or Pana's entry level offerings.

Whenever Oppo releases their new player (rumor is January), there will more than likely be a new "<$1000" king of the hill.

The BD35 does decode audio and is 2.0. The 350 decodes DDTHD and can be upgraded to a 2.0 compliant player with firmware upgrade. And like someone else said, the Sony 550 and the Panny 55 both have some sort of slightly improved A/V quality. Panny and Sony are both getting really good reviews, so I think it would be personal pref. in this case for you.. and poss. price.

I agree. Currently, S550 or BD55. Street price for S550 is slightly less than the BD55.

However, once the Oppo comes out, that will most likely be the best player under $1000. I can't wait for it.
