Default DLP vs LCD

Was at BB and looking at TVs...man those 67 inch DLPs are mighty appealing for cost/size

Look kinda dark, though...what are the thoughts on these DLPs vs LCDs? The DLPs give awesome size/cost ratios...guess I'm wondering how people feel about these?

I've got a DLP and love it. As for them appearing dark in the store, a lot of that will have to do with manufacturer settings. Many companies will have the floor models set to torch mode to showcase the brightness of the set and from what I've seen, a torching LCD will be brighter than a DLP display on any setting.

Once you get a display home, those bright LCD sets can become blinding if you use them in a dark or semi-dark room. DLP, on the other hand, gives you nice rich blacks and a picture that is much closer to what you can find in the cinema.

I wouldn't say don't get an LCD because I know many people prefer them, have them, and love them, but from the tweaking I've done with both types of sets (I haven't played around with plasma) I believe that DLP can deliver a more film-like image than LCD.

I've had several lcd's and my DLP blows them all away for picture quality.

it pretty much depends on what you need
LCD, Plasma, and DLP are all great

I personally prefer LCD, because I don't really care for the width of the DLP TVs.

If looks aren't an issue, you can definitely get a DLP for your money's worth.

I think technology wise the DLP is a better technology.
Lcd pannel vs DMD chip.
The DMD chip with a million tightly packed mirrors would seem to sit closer together than lcd pixels. So you could argue that the bigger your lcd gets the more pixelated/window screen effect you get because you can see the spacing of the individual pixels more than the tightly packed DMD chip with a million mirrors.

Just my 2 cents.
I own a DLP for that reason.

Have we really gotten into a world where the only tv to purchase is a flat one??? I have a 42 inch plasma upstairs and a 56inch dlp downstairs. The dlp is 14 inches wide. The stand that the plasma sits on is 12 inches wide. Soo tv stand wise you need the same virtually the same thickness of stand for both.
Neither LCD or DLP produce their own light so you cant say one is brighter than the other. They both have a back light.

Have had all three types. I was happy with my Sammy DLP got a good size and a great price at costco a few years back. Now because it was an earlier DLP it did have some rainbow issues as it aged. I know now that the problem has almost been phased out. I would recommend a DLP for someone who would like to upgrade into HDTV from a older rear projection set due to the cost to size ratio. I would say check Costco out they have great prices and most of the DLP come with the stand.

WOW, how insightful, if everyone only knew that owning an LCD TV would get you laid.... I am gonna ask my wife about this new phenominon.

Forget Sonys ad with Manning, James Brown, Earnhardt Jr and the Phillies Chicken, show a girl getting so horny she jumps the guy cause he has an LCD. F-ING Brilliant. Like a cigarrette billboard ad.

Everyone with a DLP or Plasma return it right away... LCD's can get you laid! YEAH.

Hello, Again, Hello... Is this thing on?? Hello, ANYONE, Hello??

Ok this time for reals... Personally I think that DLP and all rear projection TVs will go the way of Sonys SXRD, and eventually be dumped, but the size to cost ratio is incredible. I wish I had got a Sony SXRD, my dad has one and I think they are just as nice if not better then a plasma.

That said, I would opt for an LCD, personal preference, or a plasma, mostly due to the fact that I do think rear projection TV's will be off the market sooner rather then later. And with all the R&D that companies are putting into LCD's, plasma's and other technologies the other techs are taking over the market.

Your eyes will not burn from watching an LCD in the dark, I do it all the time, perhaps if you turn the backlight all the way up and sit 3 ft from the tv like with a computer monitor, maybe. I have never had the motion blur experience on my samsung.

ALL That said, you need to buy what you really like personally and not use what we say as your deciding factor, but mearly additional input. You will know what is best for you... that is the one you buy.

OT but I feel I must correct you - the Chicken is the old San Diego Chicken - it has nothing to do with Philly or the Phillies

/OT

I personally love RPTV sets...when I bought mine, I saw rainbows in the DLPs and opted for LCoS JVC set but the RPTVs offer a great price:size advantage over the LCDs.

However, the cost of the bulbs is pricey (but not as bad as the repair needed if the LCD backlight goes on a standard LCD screen)

Sorry, not much of a baseball fan.

LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicone) is the same as the SXRD from sony. Those are great, wish I had one sometimes.

Default Best Possible New 50-52" LCD Tv?

I have a Samsung 1080i 50" DLP now, and is about 8.5' from where I view it and looks fine on HD channels & DVD's. I'll be getting my Blu-Ray player Soon (I HOPE! ), and have a decent bluray dvd collection going.

My question is for a bit down the road: I don't "think" i'll be too disconcerted with watching BLU's on what I have Now with the 1080i, as i'm sure it'll look obv. better & Sound better than conventional dvd's, right? But, obv. i'll prob. want to get that full 1080P and since my room isn't that big, a 50-52" LCD is what i'll probably be looking for next. I figure with the Enhanced 1080P and it being an LCD, I can have another 10-12" to push the TV back on the stand I have, vice wall mounting it (I Rent), so the picture will look even better when I make the plunge.

ALl that said, I am looking for info from any readers with ideas on what's out there, preferably for not much more than $1000 (if that is possible for that size LCD?)

Thanks in advance everyone!

I think DLPs are the most overlooked and underrated HDTVs out there. Everyone now-a-days (and especially on this forum) are all about LCDs and Plasmas because they’re “cool.” Yeah, they are thin and can be mounted on a wall, but for the higher price, is it really worth it?

Mitsubishi is really the only DLP worth looking at. They’re the only company that has devoted the time and money in developing the technology. Take, for example, WD-73835. Has anyone seen this TV? This is Mitsubishi's top of the line DLP. I was at Best Buy the other day, and WOW. It's HD, 1080p, 120Hz, and has all the bells and whistles LCDs and Plasmas have. And I seriously could not tell the difference in PQ from the smaller LCDs and Plasmas next to it. In fact, it looked better than a lot of the LCDs and Plasmas. At 73 inches and only $2800, talk about bang for your buck. And don't give me that crap about viewing angle - at 73 inches, there really isn't a bad viewing angle to be had unless you're sitting at 180 degrees from the TV. And it's not terribly deep - only 17 inches! The 65" is only $2100, and only 15 inches deep. Every large screen TV stand I’ve ever seen are all deeper than that anyways, so you won’t even notice the difference between a LCD or Plasma verses a DLP when they are on a stand. It seems a lot of people in this forum are anti-anything not LCD or Plasma, but this TV is worth a look.

Check it out: http://www.mitsubishi-tv.com/product/WD73835

But yeah, someone mentioned the cost of bulb replacement, and that is pretty much the only downside to DLPs that I can see.

My 50" Sammy 1081p - DLP gives an awesome picture and it fits great on my stand so I have no need to wall mount as long as I live at my current location. So for now DLP is perfect. To anyone that a few inches of the TV's depth is not a factor , don't think DLP is in anyway inferior to LCD or Plasma

DLP all the way! I love my Samsung 71" DLP. I have had it for almost two years no problems. Direct TV and Blur-rays are awesome. I have nothing against LCD, I just found a better price/picture with the DLP. Samsung is the official TV of the NFL so if you buy one you will get a $100 to spend at NFL.com, I do not know when the offer expires.

Default You guys are Awesome!

wow, love all the great info and advice friends. I think i'll stick with my 50" DLP for a while, though as I noted above (?), will I notice any REAL difference when I finally get my Bluray player watching BLU RAY's when my TV is 1080i vice the preferred 1080p for Full HD ?

Thx again!

50" is really right at the threshold where you MIGHT be able to see a small difference. I've read multiple studies that say the smallest tv that the human eye is actually capable of discerning the difference between 1080p and 720p, is 52 inches. And even with a 52" tv, you'd have to be sitting closer than 8' to see that difference.

first you should ask yourself why are you even considering an lcd? are you going to hang it on the wall b/c of space issues? personally, i'd go for the dlp and take that extra money i just saved and buy a bunch of blu-rays, i guess that's why i own 2 dlp tv. as for bulb replacement, i have 2 bulbs, one for each set waiting at home to be used when needed courtesy of best buy.
