Default DLP decisions

Hello all, I'm fairly new to the forum. I'm seriously considering a DLP. Wanted to see if there is any input as to the best DLPs. I'm mainly concerned with bulb life. I've read quite a bit about the LED , the Panasonic product and the TALEN options, but not too sure which is best. Any insight as to which has the longest life span and what offers the best bang for my buck?

Well DLP in general tends to be good bang for the buck. I own one and the only thing that i have an issue with is the viewing angles, but since my couch is right in front anyways, this isnt an issue for me. Ive had my tv for over 2 years now, i havent changed the bulb and doesnt seem like i need to yet. But if i were to buy a new one, id go for LED since im pretty sure they wont have to be changed...

well DLP tv's are good, do not go for a bulb based DLP though! Samsung offers DLP stes now that feature LED's and they will last as long as lcd (60,000hrs) no color wheel to replace or bulbs to replace which is the biggest complaint when it comes to DLP! You can get a 61" DLP from BB Samsung for $1999. I almost bought this tv but went plasma instead!

I own a dlp, and it is by far the best value even if you do consider the Bulb replacement. I have a 56 inch samsung dlp I have had it for a 1 year and 3 months and have watched over 100 blurays on it and still looks a good as the day I bought it.

Default Projector Screen Over Big Screen...

Well, if you want more bang for your buck consider getting yourself a Hi-Def DLP projector screen. It's like having the movie theatre in your living room! I paid $995 for my projector (720p/1080i) it came with an 80' screen, but I just project it on to the wall (121' ). But, to get the full potential out of your Blu-ray player, InFocus sells a 1080p projector for $2,999. That's what I'm saving up for.

The cons: You need a big, dark room. Although, the InFocus projector I mentioned has 2,500 lumans (don't quote me!) so you really don't need a totally dark room.

I hope this helped.

_Carlos

Just be sure to look for the most important features on the screen when you are shopping, no matter the type:
Contrast
Black Levels
Screen Door effects (can you see the pixels and how far away - really bad on older SD TVs, not so much on HDTVs)
Viewing Angle (how far to the side and up/down till the image changes)

These are just basic things, there are lots more like the frame rates supported and 24p etc. And of course 1080p.

Good luck with your hunting.

I have a Mitsubishi Diamond "65 1080P DLP and I am very happy with it, The picture is Awesome! I have a 42" LCD in my bedroom and I would rather watch my DLP over my LCD any day! I originaly purchased the Samsung 56" Led DLP and I returned it the next day and got the Mitsubishi Diamond,I just couldn't dial the picture in on the Sammy and the Blacks were horrible, just my opinion

Yeah those Diamond DLP's are real nice - Mitsubishi has put a lot of work into DLP.

When you consider you can get a 73" TV for under $1,800!!!

I wouldn't concern myself with the bulb too much. If it's bulb-based, see if they'll throw in at least one extra replacement bulb with the TV.

I love my Mitsubishi. The 73" DLP I got was like 2,400.00 when I got it this year. My buddy was pissed because he bought the same size Mits about 5 years ago when it had a gigantic cabinet and no HDMI inputs and he paid 10,000.00 for it. I told him back then to wait but he had to have it. I tried to tell him it didn't have any HDMI inputs but he had to have it. Now he wants to sell it but he'll never get close to what he paid for it the way the prices have dropped.

P.S. I wasn't too worried about the bulb because on these you can change them out yourself fairly easily. They go for about 200 and change.

yeah, the whole bulb having to be replaced isn't such a big deal to me,they only cost a couple hundred bucks,it's a small sacrafice for an excellent picture quality tv.

I still have an older 720p DLP as my bedroom TV, and I purchased that one back in late 2004 and the bulb is still going strong. I must use that TV at least 8 hours a day, and I havent had to replace it yet. The replacement is only $150 as well, so thats not bad for 4+ years of use.

Smile New DLP Rookie Myself

I just purchased the samsung HL50A650 50inch dlp about 3 weeks ago right before the football season i caught it on sale for 899.00 at best buy but they did not have any in stock so i call abt electronics and they matched best buys price and i picked it up.

From day one i love it my wife still cant believe i paid that much for this tv the picture is great i did my research before i bought it and in my opinion DLP has a better picture than plasma.

What i am going to do is order me a replacement bulb just in case but other wise the magic is in the mirrors.

And all my connections are HDMI.

The 73" Mitsubishi DLP Diamond series costs over $3,000. I believe they have three levels and the Diamond series is their flagship model. Mine is Diamond series and I compared it with both Plasma and LCD. The colors and the black level are outstanding. I also got a free PS3. It was the deal of the century. The only disatvantage it has is that it is bigger and bulkier than LCD/Plasma and you can't hang it on a wall. For me, space was not an issue as I had plenty of room.

Although I agree, and I also have a 720p DLP projector, I'd urge you to look into other similarly priced 720p projectors (at the $3,000 price point) and you'll find many that will out-shine the InFocus 1080p model..... there is more to picture quality than just Lines-of-Resolution..... there's "contrast" and "lumens" etc etc etc....

I plan on upgrading to a 1080p projector in the future, but not the entry-level models, because I find many 720p projectors far superior to the entry level 1080p ones

Damn, that's seriously impressive. I'm waiting patiently for the Laservue. Hopefully, by the time I get my debts paid off and start saving for my HT, Laservue will drop from the projected $7,000/65in.

I posted this in another forum, but since there seems to be alot of samsung dlp guys posting here I figured it'd try this one. I have a 56in bulp dlp samsung I purchased Jan of 07 and I love it!. I recently got a memorex blu-ray player and I'm using the hdmi connection. I love the picture quality I'm getting with it, however I don't seem to be getting the depth in the picture like you commonly see on the setups at best buy. I know those setups are using the sony lcd screens and different hardware, but could those screens really be adding THAT much to the picture that there's a very noticeable difference in my tv? Any info you blu-ray samsung guys could give would be greatly appreciated.
