The Day of the Jackal (1973)

NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan released Fred Zinnemann's The Day of the Jackal (1973) on November 20th, 2019.

I wonder if Universal Japan pinched Arrow's encode for their Blu-ray. This is one of the ハイ ユニバーサル思い出の復刻版, or roughly, "Universal Memories Reprint" Blu-ray series, which is Universal Japan's line of Blu-rays with additional Japanese dub tracks, usually taken from TV broadcasts. These Blu-rays come in black cardboard slipboxes with mini reprints of Japanese promotional material on the film. Most, if not all the time, the discs are authored for Japan only.

Compare the following scan with the one for Arrow's BD, which was released over two years earlier. It's pretty interesting that the video bitrate is nearly identical, the run time is only off by almost exactly one second and there is an LPCM Mono track instead of the usual DTS-HD MA on Universal discs. As an aside, I'm still flabbergasted that Universal Germany did their own disc, but crushed the 143-minute film onto a BD-25!



BDInfo scan

This is the only Universal release of a Universal Pictures film I have ever seen with an LPCM Mono track. The Japanese dubs are from 1977, 1978 and 1998, and the three additional subtitle tracks are for the dubs. The only on-disc extra is a trailer, while there is a small leaflet reprint and a fold-out Japanese poster for the film with Japanese information about the film on the reverse side.
