United Kingdom The Day of the Jackal (1973) - Arrow Films - September 4, 2017

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B071G99Q...ds=arrow+video

Quote:
Product Description
In 1971, Frederick Forsythe shot to bestseller status with his debut novel, The Day of the Jackal taut, utterly plausible, almost documentarian in its realism and attention to detail. Two years later, director Fred Zinnemann (High Noon) turned a gripping novel into a nail-biting cinematic experience.

August 1962: the latest attempt on the life of French President Charles de Gaulle by the far right paramilitary organisation, the OAS, ends in chaos, with its architect-in-chief dead at the hands of a firing squad. Demoralised and on the verge of bankruptcy, the OAS leaders meet in secret to plan their next move. In a last desperate attempt to eliminate de Gaulle, they opt to employ the services of a hired assassin from outside the fold. Enter the Jackal (Edward Fox, Gandhi): charismatic, calculating, cold as ice. As the Jackal closes in on his target, a race against the clock ensues to identify and put a stop to a killer whose identity, whereabouts and modus operandi are completely unknown.

Co-starring a plethora of talent from both sides of the Channel, including Michael Lonsdale (Munich), Derek Jacobi (The Odessa File) and Cyril Cusack (1984) and featuring striking cinematography by Jean Tournier (Moonraker), The Day of the Jackal remains one of the greatest political thrillers of all time.

Figures. I imported the Oz disc last month. Not double-dipping, the extras look light.

Wowie! Arguably the most stylish assassination thriller and one of the best political thrillers in general. Also really dig that artwork!

Amazing news. I'm a huge Zinnemann fan; never did watch this classic because the DVD wasn't anamorphic.

Thought they might get this for Academy, but just happy they're releasing it at all really! Might even pre-order it if nothing else is going on in September.

What's the actual difference between the Arrow Video and Arrow Academy labels?

Just the branding really, so not much difference at all. I guess Arrow Video is more reserved for 'cult' and 'genre' films whilst Arrow Academy is more reserved for 'niche' and 'arthouse'. Zinnemann's The Day of the Jackal falls into both categories, arguably, as did Peckinpah's Alfredo Garcia, Mann's Thief, Frankenheimer's 52 Pick-Up etc.

In fact, Frankenheimer and Suzuki are the only directors with films released under both the Arrow Video and Arrow Academy banners (other than one or two Arrow Video USA titles, released before they launched Arrow Academy USA).

Me too, well a couple of months ago now. It's looks very good and only cost £9 delivered, so can't complain but can rebuy if this gets better PQ review and appears in a sale

I remember watching this on the telly as a kid, being mesmerized by Fox's meticulous planning and actually hoping he would make it in the end.
