I'm looking into getting an Onkyo HT-st5100 for my PS3 but have read up on all this stuff for the last day or two and I have most of this down but it's still a little too much to wrap my head around. Basically, you can't get True HD or Lossless sound with just that system because it doesn't support the audio HDMI out right? Another question is whether or not I could get this system and then upgrade the receiver later on when I have money to do what I want it to, is that possible? Either way I'm looking for an affordable HTiB for this purpose and was looking for help since you guys really seem to know what you're talking about!

A Sony STR-DG820 paired with Polk RM6750 will be a lot better than almost any HTIB and will play the lossless tracks from the PS3 with no problem.
Both together should be about $500 which is the same price as a nice HTIB.. Getting all your cables here www.monoprice.com will also save money but don't be fooled the cables they sell are excellent quality. |

You need the 6100 to get audio over hdmi and you can get it for$549.99 with free shipping from Newegg. The Polk package is $179.99 with free shipping on Newegg, and they also have THIS Pioneer VSX-918V-K receiver for just $249.99 with free shipping. I personally don't think Polk speakers are much better than the Onkyo speakers, and in either instance you will want to upgrade them down the road, however the Pioneer receiver would be my choice between the two options, and this is from an Onkyo owner. At that price the Pioneer is a steal, so that and the Polk speakers would be my choice. Its the cheaper option too. Note: The Pioneer is only 5.1 while the other receivers mentioned so far are 7.1. You may also want to consider THIS Marantz receiver which is 7.1 and only $299.99 plus shipping.
