Default Dts HD MA Sound Boom

That's the best title I can imagine. Here's what I've got:
PS3 (60gb)
connected via HDMI to
Pioneer Elite VSX-81TXV

My PS3 is set to PCM all sound formats with no dynamic range control. During playback of DTSHDMA and even a few PCM titles, I hear a sound like a wooden bat hitting a piece of sheet metal. It occurs even when the sound is turned down low. It's a problem that only occurs during what I would call extreme sounds (gunshots, explosions, rockets, kung-fu punches).

I was hoping maybe someone had a similar experience and could offer some advice about how to remedy the situation. I understand the Pioneer VSX-81TXV has only a HDMI 1.2 capability, and I guess that could be a problem. Any input would be appreciated.

Try contacting Pioneer about it. There was a DTS HDMA issue with Onkyos and Yamahas (I think it was limited to those and their sister brands, but it may have affected Pioneer as well), but that was with bitstreaming audio. Does it do it in the same place all the time or is it random? I know the problem with those receivers was fixed with an update for the receiver's firmware.

does this only occur with Dts HD-MA?

and your PS3 is updated firmware.

nevermind, I see you said a few PCM titles.

Interesting.

Well, first I would give the receiver a reset. Youd have to set everything back up, but it may correct something that could be potentially giving you trouble.

Then I would attempt to use a different HDMI cable. Maybe yours is faulty?

I would also make sure that the internal volume of your PS3 is at 0.

Many thanks for all the input. One thing I didn't think of was the boost volume thing. I've had that up for louder sound... and I hope it's not the HDMI cable (one of those $99 six footers from Best Buy). I'll try everything you guys said here and hopefully that will fix it.

Honestly, if you have a decent receiver, I would rather that create more volume than the PS3, but that is just me. Try that out and see if it works.

Yeah, kind of wanted it that day so I just bought one. I've learned my lesson since then. Used some 30 ft Phoenix Gold cables recently for a friend's HT setup, almost the same price as my first cable for two 30 footers. They work with zero problems to date.

Turns out it was the volume boost within the BD player itself. (thanks BACsader). It was at plus 4! Cranked it down to zero and I'm back in business. Never going to do that again.

I set the boost a long time ago because I had to crank my receiver within twenty dB of max volume to have it at a decent Home theater level. Thought it would help. Well, I learned my lesson for this week.

Assuming that you're reveiver is from 64 to 0, counting down. at 20 you're not even hitting the SPEC (witch are at 0) of you're amp so i wouldn't worry.
