Default Does AV receiver affect 120Hz, 24p, or xv color?

Needing to know if features such as 120 Hz, 24p, xv color are affected by going through an AV receiver?

Currently I am going straight from a Sony S300 to my LCD. Audio is handled with Optical to an old receiver.

I am considering a new receiver (Yamaha V1900) to enjoy the new formats......

Thank you!

Certainly it can affect those things.

If the receiver doesn't pass the 24p, or xvYCC through, then the TV won't get it (deep color/xvYCC is just marketing at this point).

120hz is something the TV does with 24p, so that isn't going to be affected directly.

Most current receivers shouldn't have any issues passing all those things properly.

Do you truly own the Sony STR-DA3300ES AV receiver as it's stated in your signature? If so, you should have no reason to be hunting around for a new receiver. It offers 100 watts x 7, is HDMI 1.3a equipped, and it handles 1080p/24 fps as it is, and has Farouda 1080p upscaling and deinterlacing. Plus, it has a really good on-screen graphical interface, which is severely lacking in most receivers.

It was a $1,000 receiver when released in 2007, and I would say it's still great today. The only thing it's lacking is on board decoders for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA, but that's not a big deal if your player decodes them.

Oh wait, your player is the Sony BDP-300, and it doesn't decode Dolby True HD or DTS-HD MA. That's the real sore spot in your system, and changing your Blu-ray player would be less expensive than changing your $1,000 receiver. I would suggest you buy a new Blu-ray player that can decode both Dolby True HD and DTS-HD MA. Two good ones that decode all lossless audio codecs and come to mind are the PS3, or as a standalone, the Panasonic DMP-BD35 which can be found for around $235.

If you have any doubts about it, here's a review of your current receiver:

I have a question regarding this. I have an Onkyo which is a few years older now, and when I try to run the 24p, a black screen comes on the tv and says the tv does not support this. Now, im assuming that my receiver just passes this signal along to the tv? Because id be surprised it would process this. Does that makes sense?

Both the TV and the receiver would have to be 24 fps compatible. Since you stated that your Onkyo is a few years old, I'd say it is not HDMI 1.3 equipped and cannot pass 1080p/ 24fps. You'll need to check your TV's compatibility as well since it's a fairly new feature. In any case, it sounds like you'll need to stick with a 60 hz signal.

Well, i know the tv doesnt accept it, but i just ordered a new panny that will. Now, no, my receiver is 1.1, but why would that affect the 24p? ive never heard that before since the main difference with 1.1 and 1.3 is for compressed lossless audio and deep color, but never heard a mention of 24p..

I think certain versions of 1.1 only supported 1080i, later versions 1080p... (and similarly 5.1 multichannel PCM vs 7.1 multichannel PCM). [My Denon was this way but it was hardware upgradeable to the later version of 1.1.]
I think 24p was also part of that upgrade (don't have a set to use it with, but supposedly it's now there).

Apology for the confusion - my signature is out of date with respect to the receiver. The deal I had for the 3300 fell through and forgot to update. My current receiver is a legacy ES from 1998 hence I have no experience with the updated hardware.
