Watched this tonight and posted a brief review since this site doesn’t have one:
Drama is certainly the right genre for this film... I’m not sure what I was expecting, perhaps the romantic image on the front of the trapsheet and the happy image on the back gave me the wrong impression, but this film may leave you with an unsettled feeling as the film builds tension throughout and then, after its somewhat ineffectual climax, doesn’t resolve any of the issues its characters have struggled with. I’m primarily posting this review to say that at one point in the film, the audio suffers from hissing pops that I am surprised were not cleaned up. They are pretty distracting for what seemed like several minutes, but then thankfully they do go away. If/when I revisit this film, I’ll come back to this review with more details. As usual for Twilight Time, the extras are sparse but not disappointing, knowing ahead of time that this is their standard, lacking their usual inclusion of a trailer and consisting only of an isolated music track. It is a most welcome extra though, since very few films include such a feature, and this film’s score is quite excellent, an orchestral mix of cheerful period numbers and the strains of suspenseful melodrama. The black and white transfer was very pleasing. I may come back and write more later, but suffice it to say that you won’t be disappointed. I’d be more than happy to post screenshots for this and many other Blu-rays, but I just can’t find anyone on this site to discuss the matter and possibly give me that ability. If anyone who runs this site wants to contact me, I’d be more than happy to hear from you. |
