I've never watched tv or movies with anything other than the tv speakers. I want to change that. I do not want to hang any speakers on my walls though. So I was wondering, how bad would the sound be if I just placed the rear left/right speakers on the floor? I know I can get stands for them, but I do not want to buy them yet because I might be moving in the spring and might be able to hang the speakers at ear level properly in a different place.

I wouldn't put them on the floor. If you have 2 end-tables, why not place them on there when you watch a movie? I know it's a pain to move them every time, but the sound imagery would be vastly improved.

Yeah do something so they're up a bit. Amazon has a large variety of Sanus stands for $25 per pair. Really can't beat that price and they'll work for most any bookshelf speaker. They're not high quality, but hey... it's $25 and a temporary solution.

Ideally, surround speakers should be placed slightly above ear level.
However, I'd recommend doing what you gotta do, since having the speakers at all is better than not having them. The suggestions for stands or tables are good. If you're worried about messing up the walls by hanging them, I've got my L/R & Rear surrounds hanging on a single screw in the wall. I used a little yellow plastic drywall anchor and used the screws that came in the pack of anchors. They leave just a tiny little hole that can easily be patched when you move out. Of course, for that to work, your speakers have to have mounting brackets, which mine luckily came with. hg |

I had my centers briefly on the floor while i waited for my mains. I previously had them on spiked stands and the difference when they went on the floor was horrifying!
![]() They went from clear and deep to muddy and bloated, just plain horrible. The bookshelves in question are now doing center duties, from the floor. I am using wedges though to angle them up and they are spiked. They still dont sound as good as they did with the stands but i have little choice and the compromise is something i have to accept. |

If they must go on the floor, try this, lay them on their back, putting something under so that the speaker wires attach properly and are not bent and let the speakers fire straight up. not a proper set up but it might be to your liking.

good to hear all this. My speaks have been sitting on the floor ever since my tv took up the whole wide of the tv stand.
