Cool 200GB games in the future

yep, that's right, i think now that they have finally managed to make a 200GB blu-ray disk, we may see it used on maybe the next PlayStation or the one after.

If i had to take a guess on what sort of specs the next PlayStation has, it would be the next generation of CELL procsessors, a single very powerful GPU or dual GPUs, 2-4 GB of RAM running at 3.2ghz min, 100 GB HDD and be able to play 200GB blu-ray disk games.

That would certainly be some great specs and really get us that one step closer to photo realistic gameplay and absolutely un matched physics processing.

I've heard that PC gaming will always remain king of the hill even if it does slip down a bit, it will always regain it's top spot but in my mind i feel game consoles are where games are best displayed and gives developers a chance to work on one universal hardware spec and really squeese everything the hardware has to offer.

I think although PC games can look great, i always find the simplicity on gaming on a console prefferable and headache free.

TDK and Sony claim to have 200GB disc's in the lab. Hitachi let their 100GB disc out (on a tight leash) at the CES, so it's more than just words, unlike another format and 51GB. http://techon.nikkeibp.co.jp/english...070111/126348/

I'm wondering if the gaming world will support this. With most game makers jumping ship and building games for both PS3 and Xbox 360 - that means to me that they won't be making larger games since you can only build them on DVD for Xbox 360 (unless you go multi-disc for Xbox).

It's going to be many years before we ever see something like this.

Even the most uber high end PC games are still coming just fine off of 1-2 DVDs, at most.

I forsee the PS4 having quad core processor's (somehwhere in the range of 4Ghz), 64bit OS, minimum of 4GB RAM, can't even fathom the GPU, and close to a TB of HDD!
Dreaming? Depends on when a PS4 would come out! Two years, definately not, but if it takes more than 5 years for a new PS, then I would definately say these specs are possible.

I highly doubt it will be called a PS4.

I think Sony will invent an all-new name for that particular machine.

(just a guess, based on my marketing experience).

We had the Sega Genesis... how about the Sony Revelation?

Funnier still, would be an XBox Exodus (as in a mass exodus from Microsoft).

The PS3 now has the equivalent of something like 9 cores (from the way it splits up processing tasks). The cell processor is a different architecture than a regular dual- or quad-core processor.

Exactly. Personally, I think we might see 100GB BDs used with things like the entire MGS series on one disc as a collector's edition. I'm thinking maybe in year 5 or 6 of the PS3s lifespan, if they decide to revamp the console (and update the drives) like the PS2 slim. Just thinking out loud.

Thanks for that link. It archives the accomplishment of LG-Hitachi at CES, and shows that info card where they propose a 4Kx2K next-next-gen format for the 100/200GB form of BD.

According to sony, they release a new playstation console every six years so we'll be seeing playstation 4 out by 2012, probably introduced by 2009 or 2010. As for the specs, sony would have to top the cell CPU, a chip with more then 8 cores and something better then the RSX chip. Sony will need more then 2048 MB of RAM. This is 256 MB of RAM for 8 cores in the cell CPU. How do you top a six axis controller? Would I bet any amount of money that plans for the playstation 4 are already in the works? I mean with just talk and not building some kind of prototype console.

They need to focus on releasing some kick ass games utilizing the advance hardware that it already has. I don't want my $499 to go down the toilet.

What do you think they're trying to do? Even if they didn't release any games, my PS3 wouldn't be a waste at all. It's an excellent Blu-ray player. If I didn't watch HD movies, it could still be a kick ass Linux machine. So many uses...so little time.
