For those who own this receiver: What listening modes, settings are you guys using to achieve the optimal Audio? I just wanted to get an idea of what the rest of you are doing, since there seem to be many of us on here who own this receiver.

Multichannel PCM for me since the PS3 does the decoding.

Is this an actual option found within the receiver itself?

If I recall you have to setup your audio options on the PS3 in the audio section, Then you can select Multichannel PCM on the 805. I had the issue before where Multi PCM was not an option and that was due to the PS3 audio settings. You can press the triangle on PS3 controller to see what the audio output is while playing a movie (True HD, MA, DTS). The 805 will display Multichannel PCM (you may have to select it first time) just keep in mind that the 805 will not display the codec of the audio the PS3 is decoding. The only way the 805 can display that is through bitstream and the PS3 does not bitstream the True HD and MA codecs.

Personally, when watching a blu or even dvd, I wouldn't use the listening modes at all. They're compromising and changing the original mix of the film. It's kind of like zooming in an aspect ratio to me.

When watching TV... that's another matter. While I don't own the 805 I do use the listening modes of the 605 to find what provides the best listening field to me.

Try the MONO option for clarity.

Wha?

How about the "direct" option, which removes all the processing? Mono's messing with the sound.

So then, Aramis, when you say to not use the listening modes at all...how do you achieve this? What does the display on the receiver read when PCM is set the proper way?

I have been using THX Cinema....

I am not sure what the best is, but thats what I like the best. Funny considering nothing I have besides the 805 is THX Certifed.

To see what type of signal the 805 is using.... there is a button the front of the receiver. ummm I think its the Audio Select button (thats a guess) it tells you what the receiver geting from your componets (Wether your bitsteaming or decoding)

In addition to the direct mode on the 605 the 805 has pure audio which shuts off the front display to avoid any kind of electronic noise.
I think these are meant for higher end true full range speaker systems for example with these modes on your subwoofer is not fed a signal

To see what the audio source is hit the display/previous channel button on the remote or the display button on the receiver. With the ps3 set to pcm it should then say( pcm 5.1 mhz 48) or etc.Unlike the 605 you can apply all the listening modes to a pcm source. The 605 only lets you use multi channel or direct for pcm.

I use direct on my 705. The receiver will detect the codec in direct mode and switch to either PCM, TrueHD, Dolby 5.1, DTS-MA, or DTS. No additional processing is added. Since the PS3 cannot bitstream TrueHD or DTS-MA, it is optimal to set the PS3 to output Linear PCM. In this mode, the receiver will always display PCM or Multichannel PCM.

The 705 also has Pure Audio like the 805, but I never use it. It is the most optimal setting.

^^^ what he said. Direct mode for your surround on blu-rays.

I use the Pure Audio option when listening to 2 channel via vinyl/turntable.

i use pure audio myself. it sounds better.

p.s
does any one know why the onkyo 805 switches and clicks when loading a game or blu ray? there have been a few instances were the receiver is trying to see what audio signal its getting, but sometimes the receiver doesent play the audio at all even though the video is fine. it kind of gets stuck and all i do is go back to the movies main menu and i click what i was watching again and i get the audio back. it usually happens when i watch the movie extras. the clicking though happens every time i play a game or movie. is this normal or do i have a defective unit? its not that bad, but i would just like to know if its normal.

It's normal; it changes processing and DSP modes when it clicks.

It should also click whenever you turn it on (proving that the DSP and processing modes are being changed or activated).

I use THX Cinema with PIIx which I find sounds better than PIIx on its own.

Pure Audio and Direct sound more calm and crisp. You lose the theatre-like awe affect. Although, I'll admit they sound better. I'll change my listening prefences to these for a while to see if it suits me.

I usually use THX Cinema PLII for everything.
