Default Corel WinDVD Plus 9.0 will not play the "The Day the Earth Stood Still" on BLU-RAY

I just wanted to make a quick comment that Corel WinDVD Plus 9.0 will not play the 1951 HD BLU-RAY movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still". When attempting to play it the 20th Century logo screen appears to say that a firmware update is needed. The WinDVD Plus 9.0 already says it has the latest firmware updates but will not play the disc at all.
Now the Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra Version 8.0 and ArcSoft TotalMedia Theater played "The Day the Earth Stood Still" just fine for the movie and all the bonus material accept the photo gallery. I could not get the photo galley to navigate with either player correctly, it would not return to the prior menu.

Yes I get the same thing but I can't play "The Day the Earth Stood Still" at all even with Retail Version of Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra Version 8.0. I have two Blu-ray drives in my computer. Matshita BD-MLT SW-5582 and Pioneer BD-ROM BDC-202. I have 4GB of RAM / Intel Core 2 Quad -2.4Ghz / NVidia GeForce 9800-GTX+ all with the latest working drivers. And still can't get the movie to play. All my other BD work great.

WinDVD 9 is behind... I use it for DVDs only.

As for the getting stuck with ArcSoft or PDVD, I got that with other discs before on some of the extras.

Eject and start again was my only "fix" for the stickyness.

What version are you running? The "check update" fuction in the WinDVD 9 software has never worked. However, Corel did post an update to their website awhile back. Did you ever install this update? If not, then most likely you don't have the updated version installed.

The update can be found here:

Don't sweat it .... WinDVD doesn't play many new releases. If your install plays older Blu-rays fine there is nothing you can do but update your video driver, player software, and drive firmware.

If that doesn't work you just need to wait. Sucks eh?

Other players have this problem too, even standalone players with the latest firmware. Arcsoft is the only dev that admits this problem and tries to deal with it, so if you really want to play New Releases that might be a wise choice.

I just don't buy new blu-rays. I have a feeling that computer based Blu-ray drives are a small part of the market that the movie producers don't really want or like due to piracy concerns. This means we and the player software devs have been hung out to dry, perhaps deliberately, to reduce piracy. If we can't play the disk then ther isn't much point pirating it. A few months later a patch allow us to play when piracy isn't so much an issue.

I have been waiting weeks to play Wall-E

... on your computer with WinDVD 9 Plus Blu-ray? If so, what problem are you experiencing? Wall-e plays fine for me with WinDVD 9 Plus Blu-ray. Wall-e is a BD-J title so the mouse won't work with the menus and you'll need to use the arrow and enter keys.

For reference I have the following version installed: B14.091C00.63207

This version reflects the patch that I linked to above.

Thanks rdodolak

I will check if Corel has an update. Mine crashes after the trailers just like alot of hardware players do. I haven't checked for a while as a update was supossed to be released in the new year.

Thanks for the info.

I have the same patch ..... interesting, I didn't think any WinDVD users could play Wall-E Blu-ray.

Corel Email support told me to call phone support, but the telephone support guys have been hopeless for me.

Are you Vista or XP and ATI vs nvidia (I have XP with Nvidia)

Now I have to explore the possibilty I have a bad disk, which means going back to HMV and begging for an exchange. Ouch

Seems like a remote chance but I really don't know what the probability of getting a bad Blu-ray disk is.

Darn, forgot that was a recent Fox release. WinDVD 9 has had problems playing newer Fox releases. There's some rumor that Fox recently changed it's encryption on newer releases. If this is the cause then we're at the mercy of Corel. I'd complain to Corel ... maybe if they get enough complaints they'll actually update the software.
