Default "The Day the Earth Stood Still" Blu-ray

I'm new here, so I apologize if this question was posed elsewhere. I just found out that "The Day the Earth Stood Still" is coming to Blu-Ray in December. This movie is in black-and-white. How are these types of films able to be converted into the Blu-Ray format?

By the way, anyone else excited about the remake coming out in December? I know I am!

I expect this blu-ray to look pretty nice. The only blu disc that I have of a B&W film is Sin City(new & shot digitally), so cannot say for sure if the B&W film will look superb.

As for the remake... not too excited really.

Thanks! I always wondered how converting black-and-white movies over to the Blu-Ray format was done. Apparently, it is not as complicated as I thought!

I have/watched GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK in Blu-ray, the George Clooney film about Edward R. Murrow, which was also in B&W. It was, in a word, awesome! I never could have imagined that a Black and White movie could look so gloriously expressive. If CASABLANCA and DR. STRANGELOVE and THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL look anything like GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK, we're in for a real treat.

FOX's recent Young Frankenstein B/W release looks great on blu GRAIN intact etc. So they should do this film justice. I read an interview with someone from Criterion and they commented on how great B/W films look in HD so hopefully we will see many more classic B/W films on blu ray in the future.

As long as this film is taken care of, I don't see any reason to think that this film will look anything short of great.

Black and white is such a beautiful medium, that to me, can do so much more than color film stocks in certain aspects. I can not wait for this release. Which, in a way is kind of a slap in the face because it is really taking a Keanu Reeves lead remake to get this onto Blu-ray. But I will take it.

I am looking foward to this and Casablanca on Blu ray. The remake of The Day the earth Stood still looks good, I just hope it's not a letdown.

I picked this one up today and I have to say that while this Blu ray release is loaded! and I know I'm the guy that hates bad cover art... but this one has to be the most generic I have seen from FOX yet. It is very blah and the font isn't even worthy of the film. The image itself doesn't remind me much of the classic at all. The UK release is better to be sure... but it would have been cool if FOX would have went towards the cooler original poster artwork for the release.

They were doing great with the cinema classics collection releases with their artwork on standard DVD. Just look at Valley of the Dolls, All About Eve etc.

Still a great release but not much imagination into the cover art design or layout. (Seems the best way to cash in on the remake)

I too am a cover art freak and must agree that this cover does look pretty cheap. Normally Fox has some of the best covers etc., Studio Classics, Cinema Classics Collection & Marquee Musicals lines had used original cover art and they looked great.

My copy should arrive today.

I can't get a good read on the remake. It looks like it could be good, or it could be just another action/effects wankfest.

I just got around to watch this Blu-Ray. Unfortunately the disc was unreadable! Seems like disc-rot There's some slight browning of the disc-surface along the inner ring. Damn... I checked some other disc released around the same time in 2006-2007. Luckily they were all ok. Guess I have to re-buy this title.

Unfortunately, it's really shot up in price as well. The fact that a 4K restoration was done years ago, but there hasn't been a physical release of that is a real shame. Soon?

Ended up buying the region-free UK edition. It was much cheaper. Just in time before someone announces a UHD release...
