Default New BD Owner Having Issues & Need Help

I recently purchased a Sharp Aquos BD-HP21U. We love the features and quality, but are having trouble with playing new releases on our BD player. We have Netflix and upgraded to BD, got Prince Caspian and Traitor, and they would not play. When I called Sony, they told me there would be a firmware patch coming soon, possible this week.
Now we have this BD player, that may or may not work with new releases, and there is not way to tell until I put the movie in. Am I crazy or or this a negative consumer experience? All I want to do is enjoy a movie when I can, not spend 30 minutes trouble shooting only to realize I need a firmware patch that does not exist.
Is there another BD player I could purchase with better luck? Or will I always have this issue until BD uses a standard format? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

A very lengthy discussion on this very topic. My advice is return the Sharp player and trade up for Sony or Panasonic. The very fact that they have taken nearly a month to address this issue is an indicator to me that Sharp will be painfully slow to address any future firmware updates that may be needed.

Make sure the disk is clean. I have a Panasonic BD-30 and I was trying to load Eagle Eye. I gave me an corruption notice, but I made sure that the disk was clean. I wiped it of and everything was working fine. I got the disk from Nextflix and the funny thing was that I worked in my Panny 55 without a problem, but when I went to the Panny 30 it did. I played with it and then it worked, Trial and Error my friend.

Sorry - we called Sharp, not Sony. I double checked and the firmware update from November will not correct the current issues. The Sharp representative confirmed the issues are being reported by other consumers, and we need the update that should be delivered this week.
We did clean the discs before placing them in the player. Sounds like we should return the Sharp player and invest in a Panasonic or Sony model. No wonder it was such a deal - we got what we paid for. Thank you for all the advice and help.

That really sucks that this happened to you... and to all people have trouble playing disks. For the money we have invested in ANY blu-ray player, deal or not, we should be able to play the movies we want to watch. It's ridiculous that a lot of people have to wait for firmware updates to watch newer movies. It's kind of out of our hands... but for the money we put down for players.. we expect to be able to watch them. I'm not trying to flame (I own 70+ disks myself) but its reasonable to suggest that we should be able to watch whichever disks we please with no qualms. Sorry, Blonde... hopefully you have better luck next time around.

Had same issue. Got BD21U, first BD player for Christmas w/ Narnia II. Made an attempt to update firm ware and had negitive results. After reading similar posts w/ similar problems, I took it back and exchanged it for the Panasonic BD-35. The BD-35/55 was rated top pick and best next to PS3 by CNET.
When I purchased the Panny, Firmware update was a snap (2.0 complient vs. Sharps 1.1) and Caspien fired up with... a request for a one time software update from Disney Blu-Ray! Caspien looked GREAT!
It's not the disk, it's the player... sort'a. More like the software. Exchange if you can.

+1. These other companies best get their act together.
