Cool Noobie Introduction

All,

First, thanks for the useful forum; it looks to be quite popular! Second, my thanks to the moderators and senior contributors for all of their hard work. I’m serve in both capacities on a couple of solar/renewable energy forums, and I have an inkling of much effort is required. It's fun work though.

I made the jump from regular ol’ CRT TV, composite video sources, and Dolby Pro Logic audio to HDTV, DD 5.1, Blu-Ray, and multi-channel audio over the past six months or so. The Sony BDP-S300 including five BR discs was a Christmas deal for $299 at Target. The learning curve was pretty steep and fast, but I think I’ve generally “got it”.

What a difference! DAMN!!

I’ve attached a block diagram of my system. It was necessary to create the drawing so that my family can figure out what’s where. However, I’d like to share the diagram with you for a couple of reasons. One is to solicit comments about the configuration and see if there’s any room for improvements with the present hardware.

The other reason for sharing the diagram is to demonstrate “a way” of going HD without having to buy a new AV receiver right away. Specifically, I use my old Sony receiver to handle all audio switching and decoding, and the HDTV handles all video switching. I’ll eventually buy a new 7.1 AV receiver, but I think I’ve got pretty good 5.1 at the moment.

Thanks again for the forum!

Regards,
Jim / crewzer
