Question Some of the Home Theater's on This Site Make Me Mad

Why is that lots of people buy huge speakers and put them so close together and they don't place them at 30-45 degree angles for the left and right speakers. heres an example very nice speakers but there to close together and there not towed in correctly and the excuse, theres not enough space is a crock because why buy huge nice speakers if you don't place them far enough away from each other and don't tow them at 30-45 degree angles there not getting optimal placement and thus you are not achieving optimal performance

what do you mean by tow them?

what is the ideal distance between your two fronts?

In the example you referred to, I see a toe-in that shouldn't even be there. They should be set straight in my opinion.

My speakers (measured from the centre of each speaker) are spread exactly 76" apart and I still don't use toe-in, but they happen to have excellent off-axis dispersion. In fact, the manufacturer suggests that toe-in should only be experimented with beyond 7'.

I suppose therefore that different speakers require different approaches to their optimum placement.

here is the link to the pic of my ht setup, it is a little different now

https://www.blu-ray.com/community/ga...ber=gtmorgan23

i have the little plant thing now to the left of the left tower and to the right of the right speaker i have a little media stand with my blurays in it.

what reccomendations do you have for me Phil.

I guess i could spread out the two front towers and put the plant thing in between the ent. center and the left speaker and on the right side put the media cabinet between the tower and the ent. center

I would place them where you think sounds the best to you where you are sitting. That is how I do it.

I'm not Phil, but I think you should definately experiment with your own suggestion above. I personally beleive you aren't getting the soundstage and imaging from the current position of your speakers. Try it...you've nothing to lose!

My speakers are about six feet apart but they are designed to "not" be toed in. It's in the owner's manual. I bet other big towers are best not toe'd in either.

Also some people may prefer the sound with the speakers straight. Maybe others are unaware to angle them in slightly ???

Maybe they are restricted in what they can do in that room for various reasons, whether it's their spouse or ??? Sounds funny I know but you never know.

Next time just offer the "offender" a friendly tip, but a lot of people are restricted in many forms. I also would own "big" speakers even if I lived in a cardboard box. There is no substitute for me.

I agree that speaker placement is key for sound performance... and some people's speaker placement is probably pretty far off..... but there is no set in stone formula for speaker placement. It's going to vary greatly from room to room. For example... my listening area is very wide and shallow. I have found two speaker placements that help to make things a little less "one sided" when you are sitting at either far end of my wide listening area. One is very far apart with much more toe-in than recomended and the other is closer together with ZERO toe-in. I find the latter actually works best in my situation. I never would have tried a zero toe placement myself... but it was recomended to me by one of the gurus at AVS and it worked out well for me.

Why get upset ! Some poeple might think it sound's better that way ! Some people have CHILDREN & don't want to take the chance of having their $800.00 TOWER speaker nocked over & busted ! Room might have something to do with it to !!

One thing that bothers me is when people buy a 5.1 set-up and place the rear speakers in front of them. You'll see this more with pc set-ups then home cinema ones though.

Hows the distance on my set-up? I didn't measure it or anything, just kinda went with what sounded best. I used to have them all on the tv stand and it was terrible, now its much clearer.

I'm sure my speaker placement makes some people cringe. However, I have done the best I could with my situation. When I set mine up originally, I had very small kids and my wife and I did not want to chance any tipping over of speakers on to them. Now that they are bigger, I still would not get towers since they are boys and wrestle and jump around a lot. Also, the WAF doesn't approve.

In the end, they are at 45 degree angles to my "sweet spot" and angled down so the tweeter is directed at my ear level. I haven't had anyone say that the sound seems to be coming from above us. Sure, it may sound better from a lower position, but it is what it is in my setup... and I love it!

Wow - Phil - high horse much? I mean, everyone has their own justifiable reasons for why they chose to arrange their setup in a certain way, and we shouldn't take personal offense - instead ask them why they chose such a way personally instead of exposing them publicly (good thing Jason edited it) - I'm sure there was a reason!

I know, that, say - for example, not everyone can have their speakers 9' feet apart, 1' from the wall, and toed in like I've arranged it - that's because I have no kids, pets, wifes (yes, plural) or any reason why they shouldn't be such. We can't all be single and 22,

WHY NOT!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?

My speakers are only about 6' apart because that's all the room I have in the built in entertainment cove of my house. Gotta work with what you have!

My speakers are about as far apart and far away from the wall as possible (leaving less than an inch of movement from the door) and they actually will not work properly unless they aren't toed in. That would ruin the SDA effect.

do definitive technologies towers need to be toed in?

I will move them 3 feet out on both sides and see how it sounds.

From reading all these posts I am assuming that the reason you spread out the speakers is to open up the sound and make the room feel larger, is that correct or am i way off.
