Default Cloverfield - Talk to me!

I have just watched Cloverfield for the first time. My first impression is this film is made by someone who has just watch The Blair Witch Project, Godzilla and Starship Troopers all back to back.

I am a bit puzzled as to why this film ever got made. It's not exactly original and does not break any new ground what with the shaky camerawork focusing on a small group of individuals, the monster whose obvious parallels to Godzilla movies does not need explaining. I even thought that the small creatures which attacked the people were miniature versions of the creatures from Starship Troopers.

The worse thing for me is that this film has been left open for a sequel.

I am guessing that there will be people out there who enjoyed and loved this film, what interests me now is how one would extoll the virtues of this film.

My mind is open and awaiting interesting discourse.

._.

I didn't care for the movie at all. I think it was built up real strong and failed to deliver.

Film worked very well for me. I liked the rather unusual approach in keeping with the protagonists all the time, staying with their point of view and having the monster only in the "background". Usual monster movies will show and follow the creature at some point, but this film keeps with the people.

The "social commentary" about todays people filming every desaster with their cell phone cams, well that didn't work for me.

Not a great film, but a good film imo and i am looking forward to the BD.

It wasn't bad. I took it for what it was. Just a goofy fun Monster movie. Im glad it was only an hr and 15 min though cause that shaky camera did get on my nerves. As for a sequel, I'm sure it will be made. I think they could go 2 ways. Either a movie that is past this one or another persons point of view in the same incident. It was NY city so they could have all kinds of angles on the disaster that happened.

I enjoyed it very much. There was only one thing I didn't like
[Show spoiler]It begins with telling you that they found the tape, so you know that everyone dies.
I would hope that they don't make a sequel, but if they did, it should focus on those who've recovered the tape and be a completely different style of film, i.e. no hand held camera.

Cloverfield was good, it's different from any other kind of monster movie because we're not used this view point. We always have the monster and the action right in our face but this is from the view of everyday people trying to escape. It wasn't amazing but it was entertaining and to me has replay value. The last scene is pretty interesting also, although almost everyone I know didn't catch what happens

Thumbs up

I enjoyed it. I thought it captured the feeling of hopelessness and panic very well. Being shot from one of the characters perspective worked for me, because thats how the world is now (everyone has a camera/phone and shoots everything). The caharacter knew that what was occurring was a significant event and felt compelled to keep filming even when in danger.

I also enjoyed (a lot) that the monster was not revealed in the first minutes and saved for the near end.

The fact that it was "watched" as a "found" film was cool for me, and, I like the unanswered questions that could lead to a sequel. I am not a fan of horror films that button everthing up all neat and tidy. I want to be left with the feeling of anxiety and fear of the unknown.

Not a great film, but I enjoyed it a LOT more than I thought I would. I would embrace a sequel as well because there are so many angles that could be worked.....post event struggles....or a prequel lead-up avenue...etc.

This was one of the only movies that actually made me feel sick from being tense (no, it wasn't the shaky camera work). The sound design is pretty much flawless in this movie, the shaky camera is effective, the acting is spot on, and the story isn't just simply spelled out for people. I don't see what's not to like...

It was crap. The first 20 mins completely boring, the rest, barely watchable, you hope that it at least has a good ending, and it doesn't deliver there either. Not to mention the intentional handheld camera shake which just makes you sick. I never watched Blair Witch again after it came out in 1999, and I will never watch Cloverfield again either.

spot on, that is exactly how I feel, not your typical hollywood flick.. and the point you made about the story isn't being spelled out makes it even better.

Using a handheld camera like they did in this movie let's you get a sense of just how big the monster was. The film just made me tense the whole time wondering what was going to happen next. For example; when the army is attacking the monster right in front of you. That moment is awesome. You've got tanks firing and machine guns firing at this thing and it's all in your face. It's not like Godzilla at all.

It gave a more realistic point of view, in the sense that you were one of the character's eyes the whole movie and it did not stray from that. Not for everyone I suppose.

SPOILER ALERT DONT READ THE WHITE TEXT IF YOU DONT WANT TO BE SPOILED, YOUVE BEEN WARNED

I caught it, and for anyone questioning "Caught What?"

Put them in White to Hide SPOILERS

How to view it: at the very end when they are sitting in the Ferris Wheel they turn the camera around and shoot the open water and pay close attention to the Right-Side around the Top Middle of the screen. It's there you may just have to rewind a couple times because I didnt see it the first time even when someone told me it was there.

What is it: Its footage of the Monster entering Earth prior to the events of carnage. Its from the original video that got taped over. Why is this important? its not really at all as far as the main plot goes, it just tells us that it came from outer space and wasnt sleeping underground or within the water, or a gov't experiment.

I get why they did the handheld thing, it's not an original idea. I just thought it was annoying, I pretty much hated every bit of it.

well i liked Cloverfield. i got caught up with the characters and the story. it was a romantic movie if u think about it lol...The boy who is going to leave behind the girl he loves, but doesn't know it till it happens, then wants to save the girl ,thats all he cares about no matter what...The monster was a big disappointment but i didn't care..I was hooked and yes its alot like the movies others talked about, plus like I am legand and 28 days and weeks later... The hand held camera at the start was terriable all of us can shoot better then that...now when your running from a monster that makes sense..I loved the blair witch the build up of the story and the ending wow amazing....i really don't see how anyone doesn't like that movie maybe its cause movies like that ,u either have an imagination or u don't i guess...cloverfield does the same makes u think....But there was soo much build up for that movie the trailers and stuff so i see why alot were let down by cloverfield....and i liked it enought to recomment it...

I rented again in SDVD to see whether it was purchase-worthy. I did see it in the theaters and, as I had avoided any type of spoiler like the plague, liked it WAY more than I thought I would. I might even rent it again on Blu to terrorize every joint holding my house together.
