Default Yamaha BD-2900 Blu-Player,Anyone know about this unit

Iam wondering how this player would stand up to a Panasonic or a Sony(those are the two companies i've been looking at)

Having a Yamaha Reciever it would be nice to have a player from the same company

This is where i would buy it and here's some info on it.Iam wondering what you boy's think

http://www.gibbysaudiovideo.com/yama...er-p-3397.html

The thing iam worried about is the support.I don't know how good Yamaha is for there Blu-ray players?

I would be also useing this player as a CD player and a up-converting player for my DVD's?
It's been very hard for me to find Hands on review of this player?

Here are some links with reviews of the Yamaha BD S2900:

About.com:Home Theater

Softpedia

Audioadvisor

Home Cinema Choice

What Hi-Fi

AvReview.co.uk

Many of the reviews listed above criticize the asking prioce, lack of an ethernet port, no 7.1 RCA outs and not being BD 2.0 compliant. But for my needs, it has caught my eye over the typical platics $200-$350 players. Here's why:

1. Build Quality if very good and superior to most of what's out there.

2. I don't need internal decoding as I'll I could bitstream hi-res audio via HDMI to my Yamaha RX-V3800.

3. I have a Yamaha RX-V3800 and a Yamaha DVD S2700 (DVD/SACD/DVD-Audio player) and the BD S2900 would match my setup pretty nice.

4. I have a Canon HF10 HD camcorder that records AVCHD HD video internally. I can easily take HD Video from the camera, transfer it to a SDHC card and then pop it right into the Yamaha BD S2900's slot for intant viewing. Many other BD players support AVCHD, but you have to first burn the data to a disc to watch it. This is really a convenient way to enjoy your AVCHD HD footage right away without having to burn a disk or connect cablee from the camera to TV.

5. Specs claim it does a great job of color reproduction, something I haven't heard mentioned on the reviews of many other players.

6. The going price on ebay is about $699, so this unit can be bought for almost have of the original announced retail price of $1200.

7. I'll soon be buying an 50" Elite Pro-111FD plasma which supports true 24FPS. The Yamaha BD S2900 supports 1080P/24FPS.

Overall, I'll guess the price will drop after CES and the spring. But for now, I'm still interestedin it. Hope this helps.

I would definitely not count out Yamaha as a brand to watch. Not too many people own the Blu-ray player due to the $1000 price tag,

As you can see the price i will pay will have no tax.It' not a $2000 Denon,But the Price of the Yamaha is fair only if it's worth it

I just would like to find a couple of owners of this player and hopefuly get some HONEST feedback.

I would like to know also what makes this player tick,I would love to get a hands on review about the PQ and up-converting with DVD's.

If i find that this player is outstanding and is suitable for my needs and the needs of the rest of my eqiupment.I will purchase it and have it as soon as two weeks. But i never buy something Blind.

Also having my Samsung 1400 still working (belive it or not)i don't have a problem waiting for more reviews to come in,It would be nice to purchase my next Blu-ray player and not worry about it 4-5 years down the road.

I think thats what all of us want when purchaseing a new player

There is no arguing that Yamaha makes good stuff but how good are they with firmware updates when this player need one and for that price tag I would get the Panasonic 35 or 55

i just came from the audio store,i talked to the owner ,he said there hasn't been one problem with firmware yet.No one has needed it so far.

He called up Yamaha and they said if there was ever a problem that they would just send me a disk.Iam really thinking that this just might be the player i've been looking for.

Dam does it look sexy and would look good with my reciever.

Two things i would like to know

1) What is 12bit Deep colour?
2) Whats Chroma Upsampling?

I almost grabbed it today but i just want to do a little bit more research.
I want to make sure if iam going to drop this kind of money on a Blu-ray that it is worth it to me and my system

Default Yamaha 2900 is a rebadged Panasonics bd30

I took this player home for a test drive. And everything is from Panasonic the Operations manual, the remote placement, the set-up etc. It's screen saver, color and aluminum front are all the seperates Yamaha from Panasonic. It's profile 1.1 like the Bd 30. It certainly looks more impressive and sturdy than the Panasonic, but does cost several hundred more. I admit even the red digist on the players display impressed me. Also, the newest Denon and Marantz entries are also Panasonic transports, and have similiar designs but I believe the have there own set-up menus, etc..
Okay the weight is much more on the Yamaha, so I'd believe it's better insulated for power and vibration. So maybe it's worth it. I would imagine if you have under 40 inches, it won't make any difference.

WOW,now thats some info, can you back this up. Iam not saying your lieing i just like proof of this.
The operations Manual was Panasonic What i don't get this.

So are you saying the PQ really is just as good as a Panasonic I mean there's Denon Pushing $2000.

Ive had a couple of people tell me that this Yamaha Player is Stellar.Do you think this is all bull(iam not trying to attack what you said by no means, iam honestly trying to find out what you think )

I was looking at the Marantz and pioneer players as well. There in the same price bracket as the Yamaha .Iam surprised by your comments but not really shocked

Oh buy the way i have 50" Plasma

It looks like it can decode and bitstream TrueHD as well as bitstream DTS-HDMA. It will not decode DTS-HDMA, which may or may not be a big deal to you. I cannot find any info on the chipset, so it is a little hard to compare picture quality with other players. If it does indeed have the Panny chipset, it is one of the best around. Probably not worth the price tag though...

Don't second guess too much you went to this player for a reason. Hey panasonics are great players, that's why all the majors are currently using Panasonic has transports for all their players. Remember at 13 pounds it's considerably better built than a basic Panasonic. I find their players, although great, to be small and maybe even a little fragile. If the Yamaha can give you the Panasonic experience in a unit that's more stable with a better build, maybe this is the best of both worlds. Oh yeah it actually looks really good as well. It's got a great picture and sound, if thats what you need get it and never look back. Best picture and sound is why I got into Blu-ray/Hd Dvd. I never intended to upgrade Dvd's with any of my Blu-Ray players, so it's dvd complaints don't weigh in with me. It sounds good from your linked review.

O.K this is where i am with this
My Samsung 1400 still works.I want to replace it(if i had my way)with a Yamaha blu-ray player.
My choices:
Buy this model or wait to see what Yamaha puts out next,Which i would assume would be a better make.Iam going to let all of this go for a couple of days and look at all my options for a new player.

Dropping 700-800 on a player doesn't bother me,But it has to meet all my standards.I do not want to buy another player a year from now .But I'll say it again"Dam does it look good"

I want to Thank everyone that put there two cents in this thread

Thank you

I made up my mind and money Down on this Player (they were sold out).

I should have it in a week.
I have seen no other threads or mention of this player here on Blu-ray .com .It being only a couple of months old i can see why

So i will post a small ,Personal review on this player and will be Compareing it to the PS3 and The samsung 1400. Just because those are the only players i have to compare them with

Everyone have a safe and Happy New Years

OZZ
