From Home Media Magazine...mass adoption in on the way!
Report: Blu-ray Player Unit Sales to Top 40M by 2012 By Erik Gruenwedel | Posted: 09 Oct 2008 egruenwedel@questex.com Unit sales of Blu-ray players globally — excluding Sony’s PlayStation 3 video games console — are projected to top 40 million by 2012, according to a new report from Parks Associates. The Dallas-based research firm said sales of standalone Blu-ray players will reach 5 million units this year, compared to 800,000 units in 2007. Consumer electronics manufacturers continue to underscore the surge in Blu-ray player sales, with most model prices hovering below $300. http://www.homemediamagazine.com/hig...40m-2012-13682 |

Japan alone will roughly sell 4-6M BD recorders this year, depending on whether people still want to spend money on home entertainment. I think they will, but the travel industry is likely going to be the first to bear the brunt as entertainment dollars get shifted around.
Note that in japan, the bd recorders are sold often with proprietary av connectors that are touted as "optimal for their TV", meaning Sharp, Panasonic, Sony, Pioneer TV buyers have a perception that they have to buy a BD recorder of the same brand to get the optimal video connection. They all claim some secret sauce which in theory is possible if they designed the bd recorder color correction settings and bit depth to match the strength and bypass weaknesses of each panel, though in reality only their engineers really know how real it is. |

Once Blu-Ray gets cheap enough, you won't be able to buy DVD players at all. Why would you need to when you can just play them in the Blu-Ray player? I'd be shocked if there wasn't a 100$ Blu-Ray player by the end of '09. It won't be long after that till pure DVD players are gone entirely. |

More than 30 million homes in the United States have at least one HDTV set. And that's an old statistic.
The install base of HDTV sets could surpass the 40 million mark by the end of the year, if it hasn't done so already. I just have to throw that statistic out there as an automatic response whenever I see anyone claim, "not enough people own HDTV sets." Far more people own HDTV monitors than own Blu-ray players, including PS3 consoles. There is a HUGE install base of HDTV sets the Blu-ray format can exploit. With lower cost Chinese made players due to hit the market in 2009 we could end up seeing BD player sales levels skyrocket. The "40 million BD players by 2012" prediction could end up being a tad bit conservative. |
