Default dual layer bd and dvd

How good is the dl bd in staying stuck together versus the dl dvd? Can very hot environments make the bd or dvd get unstuck?

Do all bds use the same scratch resistant coating or do different studios use different technologies? Why don't they apply the same or similar tech to dvds? and cds for that matter?

you can buy TDK DVDs with hard coating, but in the end studios don't care enough. Will you say I will buy title X over Y even though Y is a better movie because X has a hard coat.

I THINK I heard there were at least a couple of different formulations in use. But are the same on a practical level and they serve the same purpose.

Hard coating on DVD or CD raises the cost. Even if it cost mere pennies, the manufactors don't see the benefit. I had no idea that TDK was making hard coat DVD's. I actually would find them useful for archive reasons.

Little history lesson. I have no way to prove someone got this idea from me, but I was the guy who mentioned hard coating on this site 4 or 5 years ago when most of you were still sucking at the teets of DVD. My reasoning was the high density needed more protection because the tolerence of reading such small pits in the disc. Thought it would be a good selling point as well. I stated I would feel better about buying blu-ray knowing the disc would last longer.

I kid you not, I was the one who said Sony can easly find some chemists who could come up with a hard surface which was slick to the touch. That is what we have. Feel the disc. It seems a bit slipperly. Why? You can't scratch without friction. Now, maybe it was in production before I posted that thread, maybe not. But as I recall, hard coating became a reality some time after I posted that idea.

More history. Again, hard to contribute to me as this seems more of a common sense idea. At first I demanded blu-ray come in those skinny DVD cases. The idea being blu-ray holds more with less, and the packaging should reflect that idea. Some other members chimed in and ultimately we concluded the case should not be the thin case. So I changed my mind and responded that the new case should be thinner. I argued that I would be more likely to purchase movies just for having the room.

Again, while this seems like common sense, I did demand a crystal blu case and said it should be shorter and a bit less wide, as the old DVD cases are ridiculously over sized. Allowing more room for potential double stacking and more purchasing. In keeping true to my word, I do buy more blu-ray knowing my shelf yields about 1/3 more space with BD cases. I did state it should about 1/4 to 1/3 thinner.

Coincidence? Perhaps great minds think alike. But there is still a part of me that believes someone at Sony was on this forum. I don't see many of those 2004 members still posting on this site. As far as I know, I am the last one who does on a regular basis. But I bet a few of those guys might recall the old threads as I do.

You're welcome.

Actually, I had lots of help from Al Gore on that one.

Beats me. I recall seeing one of those members making a post some months ago. For such a long standing member I recall his post count being rather low.

I too forsook this site for a while. Mostly because back in 2004 & 2005 there wasn't much to discuss. Just some news and verbal "tail gate" parties. Nothing tangible until about 2006.

I suspect many of them simply forgot about this place. Perhaps they lurk. I pray they didn't go to AVS.

Mind you, I too lurked before something prompted me to actually join. My join date could have been much sooner. It's nice being one of the first, and probably one of the last of that era.
