*edit* Researching more on this set reveals that it will be a 3 disc, DL Blu-ray set. Unfortunately, it seems that the video will be merely upscaled rather than full HD. Apparently the 720p broadcast was also done in the same way. Source: http://www.animeondvd.com Oh well, at least DL discs are confirmed. Last edited by shido; 08-20-2006 at 02:10 PM. |

Don't confuse the 'need' for 1080p with the 'want' for 1080p. 1080p content is only valuable if the original source is shot at 1080p (not likely) or is a conversion from film (most often). Film can be scanned at about four times the resolution of 1080p so it has the details necessary for a killer image. But, video that is shot in HD will only be done so at 720p or 1080i unless it is digital cinema - rules are different there.
When you have 1080i and 720p sources those are (by definition) HD and they will look awesome. In fact, because they don't originate from film you won't have any film grain issues and they will be digital from day one, which should allow for near perfection when transferred to disc. In reality, the original video content should be transferred 1 to 1 directly to Blu-ray so that the absolute best video quality can be delivered on the disc without additional compression and artifacts. This should pretty much be the defacto standard for what we see from HD programming (video) that is then moved to BD. Friends, Lost, Smallville, etc. should all go straight to BD at their original resolution using their original encoding. |

I think this is a bigger story than it looks. I think in November you'll see "true bd". Dual Layer disks, VC-1/H264, just in time for the PS3 and Sony's own BD Player.
I expect to see a vast amount of BD Movie disks coming out November/December. I have credit card at the ready. ![]() What we have now is just a preview for nobs like me who bought the Sammy player. ![]() |

Bandai and Sony Animation are on the bandwagon as well.
Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2nd Gig and ROD The TV would make for awesome BD-50 titles. ![]() |
