Default Question about Upscaling Standard DVDs

Hi, new to all this Blu Ray stuff, bought a player the other day which upscales your standard DVDs to 1080p
Is this the same image quality as what's on BD discs or just better than the standard setting but not as good as BD Discs? (if you get what I mean?)

Sorry, bit of a noob if you will.

I watched The Matrix on it though and it made a massive difference.

Thanks in advance.

upconverted dvd's will never, ever match the quality of blu-ray, dvd's will look better upconverted but are far short from the quality that blu will provide

I think that needs one more ever... upconverted DVD will never, ever, EVER match the quality of blu-ray But it WILL look better on average,so your collection isn'tobsolete

Thanks, didn't think it would, but as you say, collection isn't obsolete...

The only thing I was iffy about with getting a Blu Ray was having to forkout for favorite movies again, but guess don't need to worry about that now.

Thanks for replies

No problem But be careful though. If you're anything like me... I have already re-bought some movies I had on DVD because I figured they'd be much better on Blu... but I usually reserve that for effects-heavy action type movies. Case in point... Transformers on Blu was an AWESOME upgrade from the DVD version! On the other hand, I haven't re-bought any of my comedies such as Superbad, the standard DVD will serve me just fine for that one!

Funnily enough Transformers on Blu is the first movie I got.

Yeah, I've also decided to just keep Blu's as heavy special effects movies.. Although as you say I'm tempted to fork out for 300, Dark Knight on Blu, which I already own.

The Dark Knight on Blu would definitely be a worthwhile upgrade!
