As long as you have the PS3 set to linear PCM it will decode the True HD and DTS-MA then send them PCM to the 705. Your receiver will not show TrueHD or DTS-MA due to the PS3 decoding them.

All you have to do is make sure you have selected the True HD or DTS-MA track on the BD options when you start the movie. You can check what audio you are on by hitting select or display on your controller or remote.

You can't. The PS3 does not bitstream to a receiver. It decodes and sends the audio out via LPCM. As long as you have the PS3 as your player, the only time you will see TrueHD or DTS HD-MA is when you select audio on the PS3 and have it show up in the top right corner of the screen.

I've been wondering this aswell...

Just picked up a yamaha 6160 for christmas and have the same issue. I've figured out the Linear PCM solution... however....

Why does the PS3 give you the option to bitstream audio if it can't bitstream TrueHD/DTS MA? I assume so that it will bistream any base DTS tracks (SD DVD?)

You should set your PS3 to output Bitstream if you are using an optical digital connection from the PS3 to your Audio/Video Receiver.
The PS3 will not bitstream advanced audio formats to your AVR through optical digital connection. It can only bitstream basic Dolby Digital and DTS surround audio formats.

SOOOO....

right now i've got an HDMI from PS3 to yamaha 6160/HDMI from 6160 to LCD. Output settings are set to Linear PCM on the PS3 through HDMI.

IF!

I add a digital optical cable (which i have already) to the ps3-6160 and change the audio input (receiver) and output (ps3) to the optical cable (& bitstream)..... I can make that little "trueHD" or "DTS MA" symbol light up on my 6160?

Thanks

No. The PS3 cannot bitstream HD audio codecs, and never will (unless redesigned). You will only get HD audio by setting the PS3 to LPCM and sending audio over HDMI. DO NOT connect an optical cable, as you will only get lossy DD and DTS if you bitstream. The only way you'll see the lights on your receiver is if you purchase a stand-alone player capable of bitstreaming HD audio. But why bother? You're getting it now with your current setup.

The HDMI 1.3 chip that is the in PS3 is a HDMI 1.3 'Lite' chip witch do most stuff that 1.3 does, but lack the ability to transmit Bitstream for High Bandwitdh Audio like TrueHD and DTSHD. It's a hardware thing...

Please tell me that you have been at least getting lossless since you've had both. You have everything selected in the HDMI audio menu on your PS3, are in some sort of normal or THX mode, have HDMI Monitor out on, are selecting the lossless track on your BD's, and have your PS3 set to Linear PCM? If not...

No. On the PS3's XMB, go to Settings>Video Settings>BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI) and select "PCM." (Online manual here.)

You didn't mention this, but you must also make sure the 705 HDMI audio out is set to NO or OFF (can't remember which right now). If you are passing HDMI sound to your set, then you will never be able to listen to HD audio as it will all downres to 2-channel (whatever your set supports).

[TheShinigami] Also, If you have 6.1 or 7.1, set your Listening Presets to Dolby PLIIx:

If you have 6.1, set it to PLIIx Movie for 2.0 sources and PLIIx Music for multichannel sources, including multichannel PCM (this is what your receiver receives from the PS3).

If you have 7.1, use PLIIx Movie for 2.0 and multichannel sources.

When using Listening Presets, the receiver will use always PLIIx (or whatever you chose) to matrix sound to 6.1 or 7.1, even after the unit has been powered down. If your listening material is already 6.1 or 7.1, PLIIx will not be used.

There are other options that you can use for the back surround(s), but most people prefer PLIIx. I use PLIIx for everything (except perhaps for music), and add THX Cinema when watching movies.

sorry but the bottom line for you, if you want to see your receiver light up to say: "Dolby True HD or DTS HD MA", then you are going to have to buy a standalone blu-ray player that bitstreams HD audio; remember, bitstreams HD audio this is an important feature. there is no other way and don't let anyone tell you that there is, well, unless you buy an HD-DVD player and get some movies that were recorded in either of those HD audio but I don't think you want that! Go Blu!

I didn't know read what the other replys were but here is the simply answer. you get True HD and DTS HD with your 705 and PS3. Only the PS3 can only output the Soundstream in PCM. That means that the PS3 decodes the Sound and your Receiver will always only display "Multichannel". You can check what Sound is really played in the menu of your PS3!

That's about it. If you want True HD or DTS HD Master written on the Display of your Receiver you need to get a Blu Ray Player than can output the HD Soundformats in Bitstream

You can alternately hit the "display" button (make sure "receiver" button is selected under remote mode ) on the onkyo remote & it should display "MCH PCM 7.1" on the receiver if everything is set up correctly.
I have the same set up (onkyo TX-SR705 & PS3) & finally understand that just because it says "Multi Channel" doesn't mean I'm not getting my DTS-HD or DD+TrueHD. I check the PS3 display button & Onkyo display button now just to be sure

I just got the TX 606 from Onkyo, and this is my first 7.1 setup and was expecting the front panel to light up, and was worried that I did something wrong during the setup. Hopefully PS3 will pass bitstream some time soon.

My bigest concern is, is it true 7.1 channels, no 2 channels simulated into 7, i want to make sure that i'm getting true 7.1 sound from dts hd ma / dolby + hd and so on. Is there any loss using pcm 7.1 as compared to bitstream for example if i were to get a standalone Sony bluray player and let the amp do the processing, or is the ps3 just as good
