Default Depth of Forum Discussions

There are many bad residues of the format war such as trolling, touchiness, and limited depth of thought. I believe (IMHO), as BD is the High Def format, that our discussions should be able to extend beyond that fact. People have been on guard for a long time, but now BD has no legitimate challengers and I don't think it will (it is the best format and only format with HD audio - Hurray Audio!!!). The format is set - so our discussions should move on and probe deeper into the possibilities of the format, possible changes in product selection, and technology integration.
People get very offended, maybe because they fought so hard as an early adapter, or maybe they are limited because of a passed paradigm. We as a community - to remain relevant and interesting must expand our discussions to include a critical thought process, use our imaginations, and even develop possiblities of what could be within the BD format. I would like to appauld Big Daddy in the HT forums for giving such input - trying new things, discussing speaker modifications and the like, Nature aka Rich also discusses his equipment modifications. There's nothing wrong with the new user type questions for advise on speaker choices, everyone has there favorites and their budgets (Driver King for the HT virgins thread) - but to continue to grow as a community we must expand our discussions and be open to comments - not bashing (but we must also be able to recognize humor - I can be a comedian sometimes just to lighten a thread up - like JJ and his spanish translations that's some good stuff!!!!)
Bluray.com has come a long way and it has helped me mature in the BD format - as a person matures, their questions grow and their mental vision increases - BD is not just the replacement format for DVD, it has the potential to be the premier technology in the HT, Gaming and PC/Mac world.

Let's not limit our discussion to the Old Paradigm of red ants, HDDVD fanboi - ism, and such. I've noticed an increase of High-end systems coming to this site, as well as beginners and a slew of HTPC'rs. The old pro's here will be faced with a this paradigm shift - lets welcome it and prepare.

What do you think?

I totally agree!

It still feels like the war is going on and that really sucks since it's been over for almost a year. It's time to move on as a community.

I really like the new Home Theater, Displays and Audio Forum layouts. That plus the HT galleries really opened the discussion up. Definitely picked up some ideas, now I just need to find the time to work on my room.

I also agree.

I've seen this forum as two camps, "Old Blu" vs "New Blu". So many of the "old Blu" camp want to stay fixated on the format war. The "New Blu's" (new adopters) openly discuss their likes, dislikes and expectations of the format. However whenever this contradicts post war dogma, banning of the "new Blu" often results. It's kind of been like the civil war around here. However, lately it seems like this forum has become more accepting of new adopters. It's time to forgive and forget and get on with our mutual love of HT.

I see very few references to the format war anymore. Almost everyone has moved on, and is looking forward to what Blu has in store for us in 2009.

I think that the problem has shifted from Red vs Blu to Blu vs anyone that criticizes Blu.
If you think something is wrong and try to talk about it, you are first attacked for daring say something negative and then you are censored. Mostly when you criticize the PS3. I am not talking about trolling and such things. If you don't believe me, try posting in the PS3 section that the PS3 is not selling as well as it should (which is true) and you'll see what I mean. Some people will debate in fairness and give their take on why it does not sell well and that is good. But others will attack and demand the thread be removed and so on.

Other topics that are sure to result in backlash:

--asking why there is grain in movies

--asking why all BDs can't offer a 16:9 AR.

Now that red vs blue is over, it seems the battle has moved into casual BD fans vs snobby BD enthusiasts.

...kinda like gang-attacking some guy about bass, it's directionality or lack thereof, CEDIA credentials, and the like?

It seems that all the HD DVD fanboys hang out at the Amazon Blu-ray forum.

Well Lee Stewart and Mike Morel are still going strong at HDD and AVS has lots of them left. Every thread in the "Blu-ray" forum is "Oh I already have that on HD-DVD - no need to buy again." or "But the HD-DVD looks better based on this single screenshot.".

It seems like this entire forum was a retreat from neutral forums so it was built with a very biased membership. Over the time this forum has been open it has gained lots of new membership that don't see things as red vs blue like so much of the earliest members. Many have moved on to accept the new blu-ray.com but others are stuck in the war mentality.

All my opinion of course.

Or "This never happened with my HD-DVD player!" or "I can't tell the difference between lossless and lossy audio!" ,etc., etc., etc....

You're saying you don't want them as customers of blu-ray media?

So what.... If HD-DVD won, would you have tossed your BD player into the trash can and repurchased every title you had in HD-DVD? I doubt it! For god's sake guys, move on!

No but every Blu-ray movie post does not need to be littered with that. They do have HD-DVD forums as well still.

I don't see anyone doing that on this forum. And who cares what they do on other forums.

for what its worth, ive seen this forum grow from my original join date. been lurking for a while, and decided to throw in my wrench to cause a problem or two... hehehe.

on a serious note, i think that somehow, people are as mentioned fixated to what they believe in. some people, including myself, do have hd-dvd players, and yet, can still host a number of good inputs towards threads without even mentioning such. there is a level of maturity here, yes, i agree on that, but sometimes, true colors show as well.

to echo what has been mentioned here, we have to be accepting as to what a person has inquired about, with a grain of salt. others keep on pushing certain answers over and over again, but have no justification, and even without a good source to back em up. the answer is not always a ps3, or get klipsch, or polk, or buy the onkyo 606 the best it rocks blah blah blah.

of course, others want a varied amount of opinions. others may be turned off by em, others tend to be one post hoes as well. we have to adjust to not only the new members, but to our old habits in 'keeping the guard' up.

I have an HDDVD player, too. I hedged.

The root of the type of behavior being discussed is some bizarre part of the nature of some humans to becom emotionally invested in brands, products, media, corporations, etc. I is far beyond me why this happens. It does not bother me in the least if others (besides my wife, and that' even a stretch) disapprove of my purchases or preferences, and I don't give a rat's backend whether you want a Sony or a Samsung or a PS3 or a standalone or use Blockbuster or Netflix.
