Default Painted Skin

Due on 12/30/08 according to Play-Asia:
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-...+-70-36z3.html

This is a martial arts fantasy with some horror elements starring Zhao Wei, Zhou Xun, and Donnie Yen. It was a box office hit in China, but reviews have been mixed. It was China's submission to the Oscars for Best Foreign Film, but based on comments I've seen, it might be a good idea to temper your expectations. Still, it could be an entertaining flick.

never heard of this. I might rent out the DVD if I can find it before I look into this further, but the premise sounds cool.

There are 2 versions of this film (Hong Kong version is longer) I have only seen the shorter one on DVD. Yes mixed thoughts on this Kung Foo , Sword and Arrow erotic ancient ghost story. Longer version on Blu-ray is here

Default entertaining but not great.

I saw Painted Skin on a recent trip to Beijing, and unfortunately it did not live up to my expectations. The movie was entertaining enough, but had many flaws. I am a fan of many of the cast members, but I think they were miscast in this film. Additionally, Donnie Yen was under-utilized in mosy of the movie and the kungfu was "ok" at best. For the most part I did enjoy the movie and it was interesting seeing some well known actors in very different roles. I would recommend Painted Skin as a rental to any fan of Chinese kungfu or the old chinese ghost stories. Just keep your expectations mild.

I finally got around to watching this over the weekend. As other have said, the movie is just average. It is entertaining, but it isn't particularly memorable. It does have beautiful people, overwrought melodrama, some Crouching Tiger-style wire-fu, and some CG effects that were probably supposed to look more convincing than they do. It all adds up to a film that feels exceedingly familiar, but not as good as previous entries in the genre. On the other hand, the Blu-ray looks great, with the exception of some odd stuttering I noticed during some panning shots (played on a PS3 with the latest firmware).

Right after watching this, I put in the Bollywood movie Om Shanti Om (on BD, of course), which definitely turned out to be the better film of the two.
