Default Yamaha AVR 463 - HDMI Question

I have a question.

The Yamaha AVR-463 has an HDMI Repeater. Does that mean, that if I own a Blu Ray Player that can decode all HD Soundformats I can play them via PCM on the Yamaha?
Because I am thinking of getting that Receiver for my Girlfriend.

Or does anyone else have a cheaper alternative in mind. I am looking for an AV Receiver that can Read HDMI Audio in PCM Form. But none so expensive that they'd accept Bitstream.

I just checked the manual for the 463, which is posted on Yamaha's web site, and it will playback LPCM audio received from the HDMI input. So if your player decodes everything, like a PS3, this receiver will work just fine.

thanks a bunch.. Even though the player I got for her (Same as mine, the Samsung Bd-P 1400) doesn't decode everything it's enough..

Thanks.. I think I'll get that one.. or.. the Denon AVR 1509... They cost about the same ..

I am not too good with the cheaper models.. I work in an electronics store but we sell mostly the more expensive stuff.. So I really don't know which one to favor..

I am going with the Yamaha..

This little receiver got excellent review from Home Theater Magazine, for the price. I'm suggesting my sister and brother-in-law buy one to start their setup... where are you buying it from and what price did u find?

...but the manual nor the website specifically state "Multichannel" PCM. (this has perplexed me for the longest time, some manuals state "LPCM"...but that could also mean 2 channel)

I was actually told by another member here who owns the 463 that it does not do multichannel PCM.

Manufacturers are the worst when it comes to listing exact specifications...very vague and sometimes wrong.

I guess if the OP does end up buying the 463, keep the receipt just in case.

Well, I'll have a friend buy it tomorrow. We'll see then. On the packaging it says "HDMI Audio/Video".. On the smaller one the 363 it only says HDMI Video.

I am in the sales business myself. The regular price is 369€. I'll will sell it to him for 248€ which is the cheapest price we could find on the internet. Since we have a bestprice guarantee we have to match it. (Even though those companies on the internet get the stuff from somewhere in the east and not from the regular distributers..).. So I am very sure that my company will actually pay a lot to sell that receiver meaning that we are buying it probably for 300€ or so.. But hey, I don't own the company, I only work there...

But just to be sure I'll sell him and optical cable aswell..

Screw it. Since I am still not 100% sure I'll go with the Sony STR-720 which can do it for sure and I'll get that one even cheaper..

Ok, I got the answer. The manual says it can handle LPCM..

Qualitywise I think I should go with the Yamaha.

Correct. The chart on page 14 of the manual shows it can handle 6 channels (5.1) of LPCM up to a sampling rate of 192kHz / 24 bits via its HDMI connection, which is 1.2a.

The manual unfortunately doesn't communicate it clearly, but it'll work very well for 5.1 channel systems.

I must have been looking at the wrong manual. Thanks for clearing that up.

I find it odd that the specs for HDMI v1.1 allow for 7.1 PCM, but the yamaha being v1.2a only allows for 5.1 PCM.

Very strange.

...I use to have an Onkyo 604 that was also 5.1PCM only...but the yamaha 463 is fairly newer. Just very strange.

It's only 5.1 because of the price point. Yamaha's cheapest 7.1 receiver is the 663.
