PS3 updates? What? Why? - Blu-ray Forum

Can anyone tell me if there is somewhere I can go to find out what exactly is being "updated" on my PS3 when I have to do a system update? I've had to do 3 since I've owned it and as far as I know they could be programming it to sprout legs and kill the family.

LOL. I know the power of the PS3 is scary... but I never considered it's ability to go T2 on me.

Starting with the latest 1.70 update, the system actually tells you what's new in each update before you install it. Using a PC, you can also browse to http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Network/Updates to see the info on the latest update, including a download link if you'd rather update your system by downloading to a USB key or memory card. The big downside of that site, though, is that they always seem to run a day or so behind the actual update release on the PlayStation Network.

Also, Sony won't tell you "everything" the update does, as part of the function of the update is to invalidate "hacks" as they come out and protect Sony's IP investment. But since you can't get online without updating when the updates are released, you really don't have a lot of choice.

They keep updating that thread. The latest FW version is now 1.70. There is a thread around here about this latest update.

PS: Wait a week after every release and check for people who have problems. If it looks ok, then go ahead and apply it.

I have had the process fail before and it's easier to try it again using a memory card. Dunno, I guess it's personal preference.
