Default iTWire Article: BD Outselling HD DVD? Arguments Rage

http://www.itwire.com.au/content/view/11558/532/

One quote I find particularly frustrating from this article is this:

Quote:
There is an argument that Blu-ray sales are being somehow artificially inflated by sales of the new Sony games console PlayStation 3, which incorporates a Blu-ray player.
How could sales of the PS3 'artificially inflate' Blu-ray sales? It makes no sense.

Who gives a **** about what the media says. Again and again. The numbers show a consistant growth of BD media sales. It won't matter how you cut it. The numbers will indicate the growing popularity of the Blu-ray format.

Maybe Mr. Beer had his mind artificially inflated by, well, beers.

Writing while drunk. Been known to happen.

Read the next article which has an interesting take on the Xbox

Quote:
After all, the Xbox 360 is a true entertainment center. It plays the most popular type of movie disc today, the DVD. An HD DVD add-on is available, and Microsoft have even hinted that a Blu-ray add-on drive could easily be made available in the future if that’s the direction the market wished ultimately to go in.

"Let’s remember the famous Microsoft axiom: it takes Microsoft three goes to get anything right. Windows 1.0 and 2.0 didn’t hit the mark – it was Windows 3.0 that captured the imagination of computer users, boosted even further by Windows 3.1 and even more still by Windows 95 and its successors."
a piece from the article, so we dont need to worry about the xbox 360 then as he said it himself? oh wait am i reading wrong or is that a whole contradition to his wonderful ad for M$

That's like saying breast implants are the root fo all evil! Yeah I really don't know where I was going with this but wanted to mention I like the way breats implants look. Seriouslly though.....The Ps3 IS my blu-ray player. I rarely use it for gaming (at least until Home comes out). To use the term artificial is ludicrious. There are too many people out there trying to read into this or that. Let the numbers speak for themselves. To not give people the credit to realize how good of a deal that we have in the Ps3, is giving the consumer no credit for thought. Shame on the author of this article.

I think the writer actually agrees with you:

Quote:
There is an argument that Blu-ray sales are being somehow artificially inflated by sales of the new Sony games console PlayStation 3, which incorporates a Blu-ray player. While there is no doubt that PS3 sales are helping to get Blu-ray players into the homes of consumers, the Home Media data focuses on sales of movie titles not players. If the data is correct, then HD DVD could be on the ropes. The coming quarter could reveal much about whether the format war is coming to an end or continues to rage.
But, I think he's confused. There are two prevailing arguments:

- The PS/3 artificially inflates overall BD player numbers. This is true.

- The PS/3 games are counted as BD disc sales, inflating the movie disc comparison. This is a complete falsehood, that is categorically denied by Nielsen.

...How is it considered TRUE that the PS/3 "artificially" inflates BD player sales #'s? yes, I bought it to sometimes play games on it (maybe 2-3 times a month), but it was primarily for a BD player (the flexibility of game playing was a bonus) for me. So if my intended purpose was to use it as a movie player (my movie purchases FAR outstrip my game purchases), doesn't that make my contribution to BD sales #'s completely valid (NOT "artificial")?
