question about 5.1 and 7.1 - Blu-ray Forum

I was planning on getting a new reciever that can do HD audio and I was going to have a 5.1 set up. But for movies that have 7.1 HD audio like the disney movies can I still get HD 5.1 audio or do I need 7.1?

A 7.1 receiver will support a 5.1 set-up
you will miss a little, but you can add the
rear surrounds at a later time

Ok just checking since some of the movies only said English: DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 and I was hoping I could still get 5.1 HD audio on them.

Depending on your player, you won't miss anything. Most players can matrix the rear surround channels into the two surround channels that you do have so you still get all the sound. While it won't be as "surrounding" of an experience, you'll still hear it all.

I know most guys dream of 7.1 for lossless aud.But it has been my experience that unless you have the right room or a dedicated space for your set up, it ends up in disappointment most of the time. True 7.1 is difficult to achieve. It's not rocket science but it dose require a little bit of thought and research before doing it. Most of the time "a mere 5.1" setup is much more satisfying,and less frustrating. You might lose a little but you will enjoy your stuff alot more. A good resource is THX.com or Dolby.com.
