Angry No 720p output on Pioneer's BDP-05FD

I received my new Pioneer Elite BDP-05FD Blu-ray Jan. 15th. Updated the firmware Jan. 16th. Now on Jan. 17th. I'm ready to ship it back to the dealer.
Not because I don't like the machine but, my understanding is this player is capable of outputting 720p. That is only true when the source material is 720p. If not, it outputs 480/60i. That's DVD resolution. This is a major disappointment. My HDTV is a Samsung 56" 720p DLP. I purchased it in Jan. 2004 and for the most part, it's been reliable TV. I really can't justify replacing the TV after only 5yrs. and a price tag of $4200. To add to the problem is my receiver (Denon AVR-3805) not HDMI or DVI ready. But does that mean I can't enjoy blu-ray? Does anybody have any ideas on how I can this solve this problem without purchasing a new display?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

that player should be fine with your tv, did you set the video output to 720p?

try setting the output to auto, i think it detecs what your tv is capable of doing and matches it up. let me know

There is no 720p output to set it to. Just 480i, 480p, 1080i, or 1080p.

It is set to auto. If I change it to any other setting, I lose the picture and error message " This mode not supported". The auto setting is 1080/60p Source and 480/60p Output. Set it to auto.

My TV is 768p, and when selected to auto, it sends the 1080i signal to my TV and my TV downconverts it to 768p.

It works, trust me.

It works, trust me.
The setting is on auto. The Source is 1080/60p and the auto setting for output is 480/60p. Could there be a problem the the player itself?

Are you sure? Try putting a BR movie in and hit display on the Pio remote. It will tell you what it is outputting.

Sounds to me like your using a SD-DVD.

Bought 3 Blu-ray movies before I received my player. Played all 3, same problem on all.

That's what I did. Source 1080/60p, Output 480/60p.

If it's set to auto, and it's displaying 480p, then either your TV is 480p (which we know is not) or something is wrong with the 05.

I would call Pioneer and see what they say.

Yes, but some reason when I try switching if to any of the resolution choices, I lose the picture & the error message appears "this mode not supported"
