not even close. all a surge protector ( varistor ) does is grab a spike and short it out... too big a spike and the breaker will pop and need to be reset.
a power conditioner contains surge as well as filtering and a method to keep the power clean and constant ( $$$ ) example, a $10 power strip w/ surge protection vs a $300 Furman conditioner http://www.furmansound.com/ Last edited by gearyt; 01-14-2009 at 08:22 PM. |

a power conditioner typically will protect your equipment better than a surge protector, depending on what protector you got. A power conditioner also will clean the power to a certain rating, can measure your volts, can clean the coaxial lines for tv...

I would suggest a Panamax mp-5300 or 5400, I have the latter. You can usually find a good deal on an APC though. |

Quote from emc guy at HDTV Magazine forums
-------------------------------------------- I'm an EMC engineer. I work with this stuff as a living. Most claims on this are pure hype. If you see interference, lines, intermittent hash, dropouts, etc. in your picture then MAYBE one of these will work. That's only if it's a conducted noise problem. It won't do anything if it's from radiated interference. If you have a noisy appliance like a vacuum cleaner or whatever, either put up with the temporary noise, try plugging into a different outlet, or buy a new appliance - probably cheaper than these rip-off conditioners. Same with light dimmers - just trash the old noisy thing and go buy a decent switch that doesn't generate interference. These conditioners won't do anything for a signal that impaired for some other reason. Put your money into more or better toys instead. These things fall into the same category as the rip-off cables with a $.50 ferrite core, and sold as a 'video enhancer' or something. These fall into the same category as the water pipe or gasoline line magnets and their ridiculous claims. I use ferrites when I have to for EMC reasons (country laws EMC/EMI limits). Sometimes they work great, a lot of times they don't do squat, but don't get ripped off and pay 50 bucks for one. If your equipment has FCC/CE/VCCI/C-tick/etc. marks it already has enough internal conducted filtering on the AC power. These are my thoughts based on my knowledge and experience. If anyone still wants to blow their money on these then go ahead. Link |

a few things on what this guy says as it really ticks me off.
I have a furman series II pro power conditioner in my studio rack, this model is designed to protect even in the event of a lightning surge and also protect itself. even if it didn't protect itself I would have it. it is an in between for the power from the wall and the other units. this unit cost me around $180 and is protecting around 5 grand in just rack gear. sure a power supply filters when it gets converted from ac to dc, but if a surge kills your power supply and internals your going to wish you only had to get a new conditioner ( or in the case of the series II reset it ) and not but a whole new HT. that's like saying it's ok my gear will stop the surge, bad idea. the cheap surge protectors are not rated for this high a surge and will also die frequently if you have enough surges, my conditioner won't. sure $200 seems like a lot but replacing a bunch of $30 power strips adds up and replacing $10-20 grand in gear is just not worth the savings of $150 also every IT center, server room, studio, etc has power conditioning. some have whole building balanced power, most use these.
