Default After the Sony model has anyone heard of any others coming?

I ask this because I live in Japan and am ever so tempted by the Sony, but would like to know if Pioneer or another company will be coming out soon with a machine. Any new news?

I reckon there'll be other companies with products later this year - pretty sure I heard/read this somewhere.

I wouldn't buy the sony model as it's a first generation - and fairly expensive. Also, I think it's been rushed to market so there are a few compramises (ie compatability etc).

Give it another 12 months and I think there will be at least one model from each of the blu-ray backers.

I am less concerned about other companies making players/recorders and REALLY concerned about pre-recorded media being available for these recorders in a format they can read.

Good point. I really don't think this will take off strongly until HDTV does. As well, that was said to be 2006 or so and may be delayed now. I do believe part is the bad economy. If the economy would to take off like in the 90's (well we probably won't see that again) people will start spending money on stuff like this again. I do wonder what will happen with prerecorder content but as well as HDTV does I think it'll happen. I just wonder how much current DVD recorders will catch on. I have one and would love to see them get popular and replaced videotape but yet the less they catch on the more likely people would be to take the jump from videotape to Blue Ray. I am as well watching future technologies such as holographic 100 gig DVD.

Default Blu-ray recorders cosmetics

The new line of Blu-ray's look great but wow, are they big.
I can't help but feel like I'm looking at props used for Star Wars movies of the past.
As nice as they look, I'm sure they will become more sleek.
I love all the chrome and blue lights though!!

Default Dual Layer discs

I think that the Dual Layer discs with ~50GB will create more interest... I would not like to get a recorder that is not compatible with the dual layer discs...

It is wierd - the Sony unit was announced and then no news... almost like it never happened.

Does anyone know that the sales have been like? When will we see more units?

I will be at CES this year - will have to look out for more Blu Ray stuff...

Cheers!
DAve.

Default Players shown at CES

Hi All,

The following companies had BD on show at CES. Most of these were their prototype video players - points of interest noted...

LG
Samsung - also had a mock up of a BD computer drive
Pioneer
Sony - Called it BD-ROM, handled the dual layer discs, no cartridge!

It seems that Sony were keen to get the system out in Japan but for the US they are waiting until they have the dual layer working and also are touting no cartridge for the US market.

Also of note, Toshiba and NEC were showing video and computer drives (respectively) of their competing blue laser technology (they called it HD-DVD).

Cheers!
DAve.
