Unhappy Does any one who knows how to type tire from watching hunt and peck typers type

I am not a great typer by any means but I am certinally not bad. When I see my mum type I want to type for her, she can type about three words in the time it takes me to type a sentence I'm serious. It is almost agonizing to watch some one type that slow . She has to seach for every letter, and when see is searching she will be looking in the wrong quadrant of the keyboard.

Ps: Does anyone know what the really old typewriters used to look like the ones before they changed the key set up to what it is now. They changed it because secretarys were becoming so proficient with the old keyboards that they were jamming the keys. If you know what the old set up for the keys were and can post a picture could you.

I know that speed typers are faster on manuals than they are on electrics, because they can return the carriage faster, but word processing did away with that.

Watching hunters and peckers must be like watching individuals who are not proficient with Windows use a PC. You just want to knock them out of the way, do their task, and be done with it.

The standard that is most commonly used is the QWERTY keyboard. An alternative to that is the Dvorak keyboard. You might like to read this article about keyboard standards:

Slow typers/peckers are a pain to watch.

Best thing I did in school was take my typing class. About the only thing that has remained with me and proven essential again and again. I am over 120 words per minute when I get going. I love not having to look at the keyboard to type. Really enjoy that. What I find funny as well is my fingers have a mind of their own. They know where the letters are and they know exactly what I need to type as I think it. The problem that happens is when my brain tries to step in and take over. Causes errors. Its just neat because you don't think about it. You just do it. Even when you mis spell something, your fingers automatically fix it.

Qwerty will be around for a very long time. A new keyboard layout would be suicide for the mainstream. Only people that even bring up Dvorak are geeks. Once you know how to type, there is no slow down.

I was a bit confused about the thread title, and thought this was another thread about tires.

I don't mind people who type slow, as much as it annoys me to see people typing with 2-3 fingers. I learned to type with Mario Teaches Typing back in elementary school, and it worked wonders for me.

For no real reason, my friends wanted to see how fast we could type, using some typing test program (that lets you print out certificates with your score). The slowest of the friends was something like 20 wpm. The others were 60-90 wpm. And then I blew them all away with 192 wpm (and a 98 or 99% accuracy). I printed out the certificate, and left it hanging on my friend's fridge, to give him something to aspire to.

I realize now there's no real point to being able to type fast, unless you want to work as a secretary or copywriter, or something of that sort. But it did come in handy during college, to BS my way through "creative writing" assignments in a matter of minutes.

Well, I think you should be able to at the very least type 60-70 WPM.

There is a really good blank keyboard which I learnt to touchtype on when I was in high school. Not sure if you can get it in the US though...

I find copy tests much harder than dictation tests. I can type much better when I look at what I am typing on the screen rather than a text I'm copying.

I think I can clock in a good 100 wpm, but I can't really be sure these days...

That's a good idea, you could also just get a cheapy board and tape over them also.

In hindsight it seems decent typing skills would have served me far greater than that European history class or biology. I can't think of the last time I used that knowledge.

I look at the keyboard, but I type fast thanks to online chat of the early 90s. If you typed too slow the jokes didn't make sense.

lol. I type at 120 words per minute, I've been clocked multiple times. I blame my parents. Or thank them, actually. Thanks, mom. Came in handy these last few years, and probably for the next two.
Glad to see fellow triple-digit speeders here, let's scare off the double-digit weaklings,

I carry on conversations while writing e-mails.

Scares the crap out of my co-workers that I'm looking at them and talking but my hands are moving independently and writing out e-mails to folks.

I still really do suck I took a few typing tests and I can not score even 20 WPM even not adjusting for the words that I mis-typed/mis-spelled. This website and so many entries on it has helped to get my typing speed up if you can belive that. But I put my mother to shame.

Not that this is any excuse for me typing slowly but I do have 2 fingers on my left hand that I can't use them and 2 of my other fingers on the same hand have no joints in them so if I can't be sure they will go where I want them to.
